Science on Tap ~ A Free Happy Hour + Lecture Series
This past July, my friend sent me a text.
"Want to go to a free lecture at the aquarium?"
I was in! What I didn't realize is that Science on Tap is so much more than a free science lecture - it is a free happy-hour networking event as well!
The Smithsonian sponsors Science on Tap at the Georgia Aquarium, and all you have to do to attend is register online. The registration link is small and at the bottom of the page, so look carefully. You can register to bring friends as well.
These events occur about once every 3-4 months, and they focus on bringing people together to learn about marine biology issues and spreading awareness about the concerns facing our oceans and waterways.
I arrived at the Georgia Aquarium with my friend, and we walked around to the Education Entrance of the aquarium. We gave our names at the front table and were given wristbands. Then, we walked to the event space (this event does not include free access to the aquarium, just to Science on Tap).
There was a free open bar with local favorites, like Sweetwater 420 (a locally-brewed beer) and wine. Servers walked around with delicious appetizers (including sliders and seafood items), and a table was piled high with cheese and crackers. We stood at a table and enjoyed the food while chatting with other guests and meeting new people. My friend and I happened to meet another chemist, and we had a great time swapping stories and getting to know each other.
When the lecture was ready to start, we took our drinks into the auditorium and grabbed good seats. The lecture I attended in July was on micro-plastics, and I learned so much about plastics, the history of how they have been used, and why they are a relevant topic today as we deal with their disposal on our planet. The lecture was light-hearted and there was lots of laughing and also lots of learning.
This Science on Tap event happens about 4 times a year, so follow this link to learn more and register for the next event. I found it to be a very valuable event to attend because:
1) I met other professionals who work and live in Atlanta,
2) I had a fun time with friends enjoying a free happy-hour, and
3) I learned a LOT during the lecture that has since changed my view on our effects on marine biology in the world.
There are a ton of free events in Atlanta, and this is one of the best. Enjoy!
