MEC Grant 2022: open application for post-secondary Spanish students

Application deadlines for the MEC scholarship 2022-2023 have been moved up! If you haven't applied yet, you still have time! Applications will be accepted from 30th March to 12th May 2022.

Every year, different scholarships are offered by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Professional Training. The MEC scholarship consists of a call for applications for post-secondary studies (university, intermediate and higher education studies) for Spanish students who meet the requirements detailed in the conditions. However, unlike the MEC 2021 scholarship, this year the dates have been moved forward.

This time, the new application period was announced on 12th March 2022 in the BOE, where all the requirements, deadlines and conditions were detailed. Now, we'll show you all you need to know about the MEC scholarships!

MEC scholarship: academic requirements to access the MEC grant

Grants for undergraduate or master's degree students and access courses

Whether you are going to begin your undergraduate or master's degree studies or if it is a complementary training to access or obtain a university degree, you may be eligible for this financial aid if you meet the following academic requirements:

  • Must have Spanish nationality or the nationality of a member state of the European Union with permanent residence in Spain.
  • Must be the first time you have graduated from the studies for which you are applying for the grant.
  • For first-year undergraduate students, you must have obtained a mark of 5 in the entrance exam and have enrolled for 60 ETCS credits. In the case of having done the EBAU exam, the mark of the specific phase will not be taken into account.
  • For second-year undergraduate students or higher, you must have passed at least 65% of the credits of the previous year and have enrolled for the same credits.
  • For first-year master's degree students, you must have passed with an average mark of 5 in the Bachelor's degree and have enrolled for 60 ETCS credits.
  • For second-year master's degree students, you must have obtained an average mark of 5 in the first year of the master's degree and have passed all the credits of the first year.

Grants for non-university students: Professional Training, Baccalaureate and University Entrance Courses

If you are going to study for Professional Training, Baccalaureate or entrance exams, what are the academic requirements?

  • Must have Spanish nationality or the nationality of a member state of the European Union with permanent residence in Spain.
  • Must be the first time you have graduated from the studies for which you are applying for the grant.
  • Not be repeating a year.
  • Must enrol for the entire academic year.
  • For second-year students, you must have passed 85%, 90% or 100% of the previous year, depending on the type of studies you are studying.

MEC grants for Erasmus students

Luckily, the MEC scholarship and the Erasmus grant are compatible with each other, so if you decided to go on Erasmus and you were wondering if you could receive both grants, the answer is yes! All those Spanish students who have decided to apply for the Erasmus grant, can also apply for the MEC grant to have a second financial aid to enjoy their stay abroad.

MEC scholarship: financial requirements

In order to be eligible for the financial aid for this 2022-2023 academic year, you will have to meet the following financial requirements:

  • Not to exceed the maximum income of €155 500 from economic activities.
  • Not to exceed the cadastral value limit established in the call for applications.
  • Not to exceed €1700 in terms of net income from capital plus capital gains.
  • Not to exceed the maximum income threshold corresponding to your family members (you can consult the threshold table in the following section). Just the income obtained during the previous year will be taken into account.

How much can I receive from the MEC grant?

Each application has its own specific and unique conditions that are studied in detail when calculating the corresponding amount to be distributed. If you don't agree with the final results or in case you have doubts, it is advisable to consult the government website.

If you want to guess what amount you could receive for the MEC grant, you can take a look at the following table of income thresholds. Depending on which threshold you are in, you will receive a different maximum amount of compensation:

Fix sum

If you are within income threshold 1, you will be entitled to at least a fixed amount of €1700, plus up to €1600 for residence if you live away from home (if you are not independent) and a bonus of €125 if you got a mark higher than 8.

In the case of income threshold 2, you will be eligible for all of the above, with the exception of the €1,700 for the income for university students. If you are a student of intermediate or higher education, vocational training or an entrance exam student, you will be eligible for €300-350 as a basic grant.

Finally, if you are in threshold 3, you will receive compensation for university tuition fees and you can receive up to a maximum of €125 for an "A" grade. In the case of students in professional training, intermediate or higher education or entrance exams, as in threshold 2, you will receive a basic grant of €300-350.

Variable sum

If you belong to threshold 1 or 2, you will have the possibility to receive a variable sum, which varies according to your family income and the average mark of the previous year.

How to apply for the MEC grant, step by step

  1. The first step to apply for the MEC grant is to access the online procedure page of the Sede Electrónica. You will have to access the procedure using your Cl@ave Pin or your username and password, or by registering if you are not already registered.
  2. Once inside the procedure, you will have to click on "Acceso al Trámite", a button that will redirect you to the page with all the necessary information corresponding to the Ministry of Education scholarship. Scroll down to the bottom and click on "Continue".
  3. Fill in the different fields with your personal information, accept the boxes corresponding to the authorisations and click "Continue" again.
  4. Verify your identity again by entering the requested data and finally click on "Continue".
  5. Next, you will have to fill in a 3-page form where you will have to provide the following information: personal details, information about your family address, bank details where you would like the grant to be paid (you must be the holder or co-holder), financial situation, information about the members of your family and, finally, information about your academic details.
  6. Finally, once you have checked that all the information provided is correct, you can sign and submit the application.

Application status and MEC grant results

You will be able to check your MEC grant status through the "Sede Electrónica" by logging in with the same account you used to confirm your application.

Once you see that the status changes to "Resuelta", this means that you will be able to check whether or not you have been awarded the MEC grant. Once the application has been resolved, you will have a period of 10 working days to make allegations.

You will receive an email informing you of the final results during the months following the application deadline. Be patient!

Don't forget you have until 23:59h on 12th May to submit your application. Whether or not you know what you are going to study for the next year, the best thing to do is to apply for the scholarship, there will be no second chances!
