Chevening Scholarship Requirements

Are you ambitious? Do you feel that natural explorer's instinct? Then you already meet the first requirement for applying for this scholarship: you must want it bad enough!

Seriously, what I've just said is important, but if you want to know if you are really eligible to participate in the Chevening programme, you will have to meet the following requirements:

  • Not be British.
  • Not be working at a public service position in the UK or work at a sponsoring university.
  • Not have received a grant from the UK government in the past.
  • Live in one of the countries accepted in the Chevening scholarship.
  • Have graduated from a Bachelor's degree to be able to study a Master's degree in the UK.
  • Have at least two years of work experience (equivalent to 2800 hours of work experience). Any kind of full-time or part-time work, paid or unpaid internships and voluntary services count as work experience.
  • You must have applied to at least 3 eligible courses within the UK and have been accepted in at least one of them. For a course to be eligible, it must start in autumn (September/October), it must be a training course (not a research course), it must lead to a master’s degree qualification and it must be located in the UK.

Would you like to make sure that the Master's course you would like to study is eligible for this scholarship? You can check it on Find a course. Choose the university you want to study at or the course you are most interested in and select the region in which it is located. You will see a list of partner universities so that you can check if they include the one that will be your new home from now on.

What does the Chevening Scholarship cover?

If you finally receive the Chevening scholarship, you are in luck, because you will be able to save the costs that usually hurt the most when deciding to study abroad. Would you like to know what you will save thanks to this scholarship?

The Chevening scholarship covers:

  • The total amount of the master's degree tuition fee
  • Transport to and from your destiny.
  • The amount of £75 for the cost of the tuberculosis test, if required
  • A monthly allowance covering accommodation costs and manutention. The amount may vary from year to year and depending on the location of the accommodation.
  • An arrival allowance.
  • A departure allowance.

Undoubtedly one of the most generous scholarships for foreign students you can find to study in the UK, are you with me?

Chevening scholarship procedure and dates: what to expect?

Send your application

The opening date of the application process for the Chevening programme in the UK was 3 August 2021, which means that it is no longer possible to apply for the academic year starting in 2022. However, you can prepare in advance and apply for your Chevening 2023 scholarship this August 2022.

You will be able to submit your application in August - important! Once you have submitted your application, you will not be able to change it, so don't rush to send it and check it carefully to avoid any misunderstandings - you will have until November at the earliest to send it in!

Prepare for your interview

From February onwards, they will start contacting all those candidates who have passed the selection process. Get ready to impress them! The key? Demonstrate that you deserve this scholarship more than anyone else, that you will make the most of it, whatever it takes. They will trust you with their money, so show them that it will be worth it!

What happens next? You will have to hand in all the documents requested during the month of February, so prepare in advance references from former employers or teachers who can give you a good reference. It is very important to leave a good impression!

Throughout the months of February, March and April, interviews with recruiters and candidates will take place, i. e. you. Warm up and get ready to go!

Pack your bags!

And finally, and obviously most importantly, the results! In January 2023 you will get the results of the process, that's when you will find out if you are finally going to the UK to live the best years of preparation for your professional career! If you are finally selected, you will only have to receive confirmation from the university and you will be able to start your studies in September or October, what a pleasure!
