Experience in Birmingham, United Kingdom by Kliment

What is it like to live in Birmingham? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Although I am in Birmingham for a short period, I can say that it has a very welcoming atmosphere, the architecture is so pleasant that it makes you feel as home, and what's most important for any foreigner as my self, the people are so friendly and polite that instantaneously you feel like you belong. There is no discrimination whatsoever.

What is the student lifestyle like in Birmingham?

I came to Birmingham to find a PhD program for my future studies, so technically I'm not yet a student here, however from the consultations that I made so far with Birmingham University staff and students alike, it seems that it could be a very motivating academic life. The Professors on the campus were very open minded, helpful and polite for someone that is just a visitor. I can only imagine what level of cooperation dose their graduate and postgraduate students obtain.

How much does it cost to live in Birmingham?

For a English city it costs very little. Since I am from the Balkans, I can say that the food and their stores are chip as most of those in my region. The price of public transportation is fair. Monthly buss tickets range about fifty pounds or so.

For a student its very easy to find accommodation. Here almost everybody is letting so the prices are not that high.

Usually I cook at home. The food that you can find at the local supermarkets is not that expensive and there is variety of choice.

What places would you recommend visiting in Birmingham?

I'd definitely recommend the city center. However the area around the University of Birmingham is full with stores and lots of cousins and pubs. Most of the people are students so there's a lot of fun.

Is it good to eat out in Birmingham? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

I would recommend the steak houses that serve authentic English food. The Chinese restaurants are also fine and not expensive. All known international food chains are present as well.

Is the nightlife good in Birmingham? Where is good to go?

I can't say much about the night life because I am in my early thirties so I don't party as I use to 10 years ago. All I can say is that there are some night clubs at the city center near the Tai Chi tower.

What advice would you give future students heading to Birmingham?

While you study at the local Universities, do well at school and meet as much people as you can.
