Thousand adventures, Birmingham

It is said that heavy-metal music was born in Birmingham, since bands like Judas Priest and Black Sabbath were formed in this city. If we are interested in other kind of music, like reggae music, we will find that other groups such as the UB-40 are also “brummies” (natives of Birmingham).
But I would not like to talk just about music. If you are thinking about doing your Erasmus programme in Birmingham, congratulations for your choice. Birmingham is located in the heart of Great Britain, and it is probably the most important city of England after London. It has more than one million inhabitants. If you are looking for a university atmosphere, Birmingham has five important universities (it is true, five universities only in Birmingham). That is the reason why it is the European city with the youngest population.

If you like bars, pubs, discos, restaurants, etc. you will find lots of them in Birmingham (I highly recommend going to Broad Street if you want to spend a really funny night). For healthier people, sport lovers, the universities offer you a wide range of activities and sport clubs. You can practice sports such as “aikido” or “lacrosse” (I don’t know what it is, but it sounds interesting) and also something that seems to be invented by a Spanish person: “trampolining”. For football lovers, Birmingham has two teams on Premier Division, the Birmingham City Football Team and the famous Aston Villa. Furthermore, Birmingham has some theatres, concert halls (LG Arena, O2 Academy Birmingham, where artists like Justin Timberlake, the Killers or U2 have performed), pubs with live music (Jam House, the Custard Factory), art galleries (Barber Institute of fine Arts, located in the University Campus of Birmingham) and other cultural choices.

Furthermore, from Birmingham it is really easy to travel to other parts of England. The city has its own airport and an important train station in the centre of the city (the train is probably the best option if you want to travel around the country). You can go to Stratford-upon-Avon (William Shakespeare’s home town) in less than one hour by train. There are companies like MegaBus that offers really cheap tickets, for instance, to Edinburgh or London for 10 pounds!

Finally, if you think that the worst of England is the dubious quality of its gastronomy, Birmingham can offer you lots of advantages on this aspect. The city is known by English people due to its great number of Indian restaurants. If I say to you that it is probably the most cosmopolitan English city after London, you can be sure that you are going to try lots of traditional plates from all over the world.

If you want to know more about Birmingham. I am sorry, but you will have to go there and discover it by yourself!
