Experience in Birmingham, United Kingdom by Giulia Pia

What is it like to live in Birmingham? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Birmingham is the second biggest and busiest city in the United Kingdom. Even though it's defined like this, it is one of the most livable cities I have ever been to. It is full of international people, therefore full of many different cultures, foods and lots of open-minded people. It has a huge market in the centre where you can get really good quality products for very little money. A city full of museums and parks. It has an airport really close to the city that has lots of connections to airports from all around the world.

What is the student lifestyle like in Birmingham?

The student lifestyle is very international and fun. Because of the international aspect, you also learn so much about so many places and their customs, including how to party in various different areas of the world.

How much does it cost to live in Birmingham?

The prices in Birmingham are quite normal. It gets obviously cheaper the further out you go from the city centre and if you choose to live with other people.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Birmingham? Is there any advice you can give?

It is definitely not hard to find accommodation in Birmingham, but you still do not want to leave it all at the last minute... especially if you're on a tight budget.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

In this city there are all kinds of supermarkets where you can find all kinds of food from anywhere you like, so it really depends on your personal taste, but it is always fun to improvise or experiment with new things and products that you may have never seen or heard about before.

What places would you recommend visiting in Birmingham?

In the city there are lots of parks and museum (my favorite is the "Think Tank", an interactive science museum). Go to the theatre. Or take a bus to some cities on the outskirts and enjoy what they have to offer, for example, you could go to Warwick and see the castle or go to the Peak District (it is a little bit further away but very beautiful). Just organize yourself properly and you will find lots to see. If you have some difficulties, ask some people that you meet (young or old) they'll be able to give you advice!

Is it good to eat out in Birmingham? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

I love eating out in Birmingham! There are so many different cuisines in the city that you're spoiled for choice... although I do recommend going to China Town (my personal favorite): an area in which there are only good quality Chinese restaurants. But be warned, they may not speak perfect English, do be patient and kind.

Is the nightlife good in Birmingham? Where is good to go?

Birmingham has a great nightlife! Most people travel a good amount to get a taste of it before getting on with their normal routine.

What advice would you give future students heading to Birmingham?

Birmingham is a great, fun and really livable city. You will enjoy it! Even if you don't quite like nightlife and are a bit more of an introvert, there are lots of green areas in which you can "escape" and not feel the city for a while.
