Experience in Birmingham, United Kingdom by Andrea

What is the student lifestyle like in Birmingham?

The student lifestyle is great in Birmingham. There is lots of nightlife and places to eat out. Safety in Selly Oak (a student area) is an issue, especially at night. The facilities at the University of Birmingham are also fantastic.

How much does it cost to live in Birmingham?

Last year I paid £80 every week in rent which included bills but I think this is quite cheap in Selly Oak (a large student community). If you are willing to walk further to uni, rent becomes cheaper. Halls of residence are extremely expensive although the Vale is very nice.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Birmingham? Is there any advice you can give?

No, it is very easy to find.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is much the same as in any city in England. There are lots of restaurants, particularly takeaways (pizza, chicken, Indian etc. )

What places would you recommend visiting in Birmingham?

The Bullring is great for shopping. You can also visit Cadbury's World (a chocolate factory). For dining or going out for drinks, Brindley Place on the canal is nice.

Is it good to eat out in Birmingham? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yes there is so much choice. There are many restaurants from chains i. e. Pizza Express, Cafe Rouge, Las Iguanas. My favourite restaurant is a tapas bar in the Mailbox called Bar Estilo. For a cheap and local meal with generous portion sizes Banana Leaf on Bristol Rd in Selly Oak is also great.

Is the nightlife good in Birmingham? Where is good to go?

There is so much choice but it largely depends on the night. Gatecrasher is good on Mondays and Fridays. On Tuesdays try Players or go to Risa on Thursdays. The student night at the guild (University of Birmingham) is on Saturdays which is normally a cheap night but tickets are hard to get. You must buy them at least a week in advance.
