Going on a night out in Birmingham
Well, I don't know if you are aware, but Birmingham is a university city; for that reason, it has such a great student lifestyle. You won't ever get bored here.
Pubs to go to
- Sacks of Potatoes: this pub is at the Aston University campus. If you take out a student card (by showing them your University student card) they give you discounts on drinks. You can also eat here.
- Wetherspoons: The Square Peg. You'll probably be wondering: what is a 'Wetherspoons'? Well, it's a chain of pubs you will find all over the United Kingdom where alcohol is a lot cheaper than in any other pub. In every city, they have different names and in Birmingham it's called 'The Square Peg'. It's right in the centre on Corporation Street. It serves every kind of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink: cider, beer, gin, rum and cocktail pitchers (you can get two pitchers for twelve pounds). It's quite cheap and if you don't want to have pre-drinks at yours, you can come here. As it's also a pub, they serve a variety of pub food.
Cocktail bars
If you're a fan of cocktails and you don't mind paying a little more for drinks, I recommend the following bars:
- Turtle Bay: I mentioned this in a previous post about where to eat in Birmingham, but Turtle Bay also has a wide range of cocktails. At Happy Hour it's two-for-one (and they're not too expensive).
- The Botanist: This cocktail place is a lot more expensive than the others, but people love it for the way the drinks are served. They seerve them in things like flowerpots!
- The Alchemist: Just like The Botanist, drinks are really expensive but it's worth it because they have more alcohol in them and the presentation is always amazing. They use nitrogen liquid and the shapes of the glasses make it look like a science experience, hence its name.
Bars and Nightclubs
The main strip is on Broad Street. This is like a never-ending road of clubs. The music that you'll hear is mainly 'drill', which is a type of afro-trap. You can go to events here or just go out and go with the flow on a Friday or Saturday night.
The main application where you can find the cheapest tickets is called 'Fatsoma', available for Android and iOS. On the app, you just have to type in the city and the day you want to look for events to go to. They have tickets for so many of the places on Broad Street; you just have to pay by card on the application and you can access your tickets from your phone.
During the last two weeks in September, in England everybody celebrates something called 'Freshers Week'. It's a week or two where students go out on the town or go to events (at the universities, and also in clubs and pubs).
The biggest and most popular club is called Pryzm. It has a few different floors with different rooms playing different kinds of music. There are rooms for electronic music, pop, drill, etc. Also, on Fridays during term, they have a special night called the Spanish Party, where they turn one of the rooms into a Spanish club, playing reggaeton. You can buy these tickets on Fatsoma and I think they cost €5.
The most popular bars are Rosie's, Players and Snobs. Snobs is 100% indie music and it has two or three rooms.
Raves: drumnbass
If you like electronic music there are lots of places which play drumnbass. This kind of music is really popular in the UK, and the atmosphere is incredible. Personally, I prefer this kind of place to the others. You get to meet loads of people, and the drinks are a lot cheaper. If you want to find a good rave, you just have to download the application Skiddle, and type in the city and when you want to go. Lots of events will come up, but make sure you put in the type of music you want; at raves they play drumnbass, like I said.
The most popular places in Birmingham are:
- Amusement 13: it's the biggest and it holds the most important events. Here, the more well-known artists play, and the tickets are more expensive. Or less, depending on the event you go to and when you buy your ticket. They have different rooms and a terrace.
- The Mill: I can't speak from experience because I've never been, but people say it's a really good place.
- PST: this place is a lot more alternative. Tickets cost no more than five pounds, and the style is like reggae mixed with drumnbass. I really like this place because it's more original and drinks are super cheap.
