Udane's experience in Bilbao, Spain

What do you think of Bilbao as a place to live? Would you recommend it? What's it like?

I have been living in Bilbao for two years and honestly, it has been very comfortable. I can't say I love it, for the simple fact that almost nobody speaks Basque there, and for me that is a crucial requirement. Despite that, for students I totally recommend it because you always find something to do and you meet a lot of people.

What student life like in Bilbao?

There's a very good student atmosphere, especially in Deusto area (which is where most students live) and the Casco Viejo. On Thursdays you can always find an active nightlife in the Casco area and we all end up getting together in the Antzoki. The residents usually go there more than the students, so more than clubs I recommend bars.

How much does it cost to live there?

Living in Bilbao doesn't cost much, just like any other city. Accommodation is around 200-300 euros a month, and public transport if you exclude the Barik, Bilbao's metro, doesn't cost too much. Of course, with the university being so far away and having to go by bus you'll spend €10 a week minimum on transport.

Did you struggle to find accommodation in Bilbao? Can you give any advice?

In Bilbao there's always some accommodation available for students, so you won't have any problems. The best area to live in is Deusto or La Calle Autonomía, as more students tend to live here.

How is the country's food? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is perfect. There are different bars and restaurants and you can try EVERYTHING from every culture. There's an Indian restaurant, a Mexican and vegetarian restaurant, millions of Italian, Asian and Peruvian restaurants... In the Casco Viejo you'll find some great food, as well as in San Mames.

What places would you recommend to visit?

  • Algorta,
  • Getxo,
  • Gernika,
  • Portugalete.
