The best burgers in Bilbao

Whether you're on an Erasmus year, part of SICUE or just visiting, gastronomically speaking, you must know that Bilbao is one of the best choices you could make. Later on, I will talk about traditional Basque food, the best desserts in the area and alternative restaurants to visit. However, I think it's incredibly important to also mention the options available to you in Bilbao when it comes to getting a good burger. And there is nothing more appealing than going out to eat one of these marvels of American cuisine, especially if you're going with friends!

Luckily, in Bilbao you can find many high quality burgers. The rating is dependant on who you ask, but one of these will be everyone's favourite. After twenty years of living here, these are the best for me and my friends:

EL DEPÓSITO

This burger restaurant can be found in Villarías street, number 6. It's a small place that is usually full up (so leave enough time when you go) and that has a menu with eight different burgers, all containing beef (vegetarian and vegan alert). The meat is excellent quality and the price of a burger with potato wedges is only € 6. 5... Mc Donald´s price!

It also serves salads and has an everyday menu from Monday to Friday. Also, at the bar you can find a variety of cakes that are really good. We give it a ten.

LA BRASA CANALLA

Located in Calle Elkano, number 24, many people consider this the best burger restaurant in Bilbao. Honestly, this place is tops and the burgers will have you licking your fingers clean. We've only placed this restaurant in second place in our particular ranking because the burgers are somewhat more expensive compared to those of El Depósito. The meat is also really high quality and the options are more varied. Also, in the menu you can also find nachos (a definite “must”) as wel as other types of dishes. As for desserts, don't hesitate to try the "mousse of dulce de leche y oreo"... it's the best dessert you'll taste during your time in Bilbao!

By the way, make sure you leave plenty of time for this one too. Particularly if you're going as a big group!

TIPULA BURGER

This little place in Casco Viejo has a varied menu with slightly more special burgers. I have attached the menu to give you an idea of what you can find. The truth is, they're all very good and the fusion of flavours is spectacular. Also, you can find sandwiches and various snack options. Out of the snacks on offer, it's worth mentioning the onion rings with Idiazabal cheese…. it's delicious!

The price is similar to what you pay for a burger at La Brasa Canalla. Just like the two previous restaurants, the restaurant is small, so make sure you leave enough time for your meal.

OLD JACK

Old Jack is a burger chain that has become very popular recently. In Bilbao, you can find it in Calle Iparraguirre, number 15, as well as in the shopping centre Megapark (in Barakaldo, half an hour from la capital vizcaína by metro).

Despite not being very "pro-franchise", I admit that this restaurant serves really good quality burgers. Its "Angus" meat and the enormous list of options make this place a very appealing place to eat a burger with your friends. Also, the desserts here are very worthwhile.

THE GOOD BURGER

This is a fast food restaurant. It's far from the best burger you'll eat during your stay in Bilbao but it's a very good option for when you want to eat cheap. I definitely think it's a much better option than eating at McDonald's or Burger King.

This place is located in La Plaza Circular (which very close to the streets with all the night life, by the way), and is a more than valid option if you want to enjoy a burger and some fries with your friends. Furthermore, the beer here is very cheap and on Thursdays you have 2 for 1 on the entire menu. Of course, this makes it one of the best options for student life and for times when there's not much money in your pockets...

AND IF YOU LOOK FOR VEGETARIAN OR VEGAN OPTIONS…

LA CAMELIA VEGAN BAR

If you are vegetarian or vegan, the best burger for you will be found here, in Calle Villarías, at number 3 (coincidentally, near El Depósito). This tiny place is a very good option to eat any animal free meals (I'll talk to you about it in more detail soon). But, above all, it's the best option if you want to chow down on a vegan burger.
