Experience in Bern, Switzerland by Jade
What is it like to live in Bern? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Bern is an absolutely beautiful city, the only downside to it is that it is rather expensive so be prepared for that. I would recommend living a little outside of Bern to enjoy the beautiful landscapes, and it works well due to the amazing public transportation they have here. Most Swiss people do speak English very well, but I would recommend taking some swiss german classes and maybe finding some other international students.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bern?
Can't say much from my own experience, but the Uni area is beautiful and designed for social activities.
How much does it cost to live in Bern?
A lot. If you are earning money locally it should balance it out, but it's an expensive country in general.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bern? Is there any advice you can give?
Since Bern is composed of a lot of expats there is a constant stream of people moving here and away so it's good to especially find temporary accommodation and then later find another more permanent apartment if needed.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I would certainly recommend cooking yourself since it is so expensive. There are also quite a lot of restaurants right in the center of Bern. You can buy food at Coop for more international brands, and Migros for more local brands (I prefer Migros since it's a bit more inexpensive and also carries more foods you need for a regular household rather than just snacking).
What places would you recommend visiting in Bern?
My favorite place is the Bundeshaus, absolutely gorgeous and right in the center. From there you can also go to the Bäremgraben or even the zoo, everything is walking distance if you have a few hours. Going swimming in the Aare is one of my favorite activities, you can start at the Marzili bad and work our way back, download the app "Schwumm/Aareschwumm" and CHECK THE CONDITIONS, do not overestimate yourself, once you're in the river should do the job for you though.
Is it good to eat out in Bern? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
One of my favorite spots with friends is the "Cha cha Thai" quite nice food, even on a very hot day. Other than that, the Luce in Bern is probably the best Italian place in town, but it's a bit fancier.
Is the nightlife good in Bern? Where is good to go?
There's quite a few rather small bars you can go to.
What advice would you give future students heading to Bern?
Enjoy the view, I don't think you'll ever visit a more beautiful city. I would also really recommend getting around by bicycle and public transportation. There is a LOT of roundabouts and weird crossings and it's just way too stressful to drive a car.
