Experience in Bern, Switzerland, by Kevin
What is it like to live in Bern? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Bern is a rather calm city with few traffic. It has a nice old town, the Aare river flowing around it (yes, it's possible to swim in it! But take care, it's dangerous). There are some nice parks right in the centre and on top of the railway station.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bern?
As I am a part time student working weekdays, I don't really have time for student activities. Find out what it is for you. Bern is certainly a good city to relax and to focus on your studies. I wouldn't recommend it to you if want to have party all the time.
How much does it cost to live in Bern?
I think the living costs are average for swiss standards. It is somewhat cheaper than Zurich or Geneva.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bern? Is there any advice you can give?
Look at wgzimmer.ch, it's not that hard to find a room.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Typical swiss food is Fondue, Raclette, and Rösti.
What places would you recommend visiting in Bern?
Marzili to go swimming in summer, Grosse Schanze to hang out, Rosengarten if you want to see beautiful flowers, Berner Münster for a nice view over the city, Aarbergergasse to have party...
Is it good to eat out in Bern? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Tibits! It's a vegetarian restaurant right at the railway station.
Is the nightlife good in Bern? Where is good to go?
Dachstock, Bierhübelia and ISC for parties, Konzert Theater Bern for cultural events... There are plenty of pubs and restaurants in the old town, all in walking distance.
What advice would you give future students heading to Bern?
Visit the old town and go swimming in the Aare river.
You can hire bikes for free in summer.
