What is it like to live in Berlin? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Berlin is not like any other European city. It is different, diverse and breath-taking! I like the spirit of freedom in Berlin and a mix of different cultures that makes this city unique and beautiful. Interesting also is the fact that the overall infrastructure of the city is eco-friendly. Berlin is a crazy city and I definitely recommend you to live in Berlin if you want to explore diverse cultures and people, and most importantly yourself.

What is the student lifestyle like in Berlin?

The student atmosphere is very vibrant and friendly in Berlin. You will find lots of ex-pats just like you and will definitely enjoy the atmosphere of intelligent, open-minded people. Students around are very supportive and kind, and you will definitely find like-minded people and will make lots of friends.

How much does it cost to live in Berlin?

My monthly expenses in Berlin were around 1500-1700 Euros. About 40-45% of that sum was spent on accommodation and utilities, while 13-15% were spent on transportation and 20-25% on groceries. The remaining part was successfully spent on leisure activities, and cafes/restaurants.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Berlin? Is there any advice you can give?

Luckily, I have many friends in Berlin. Before moving to Berlin, I asked my friends to help me with accommodation. So one of my friends helped me to find a cosy and cute apartment in the central district of Moabit. The neighbourhood is quiet and has easy access to Central Berlin, which was an excellent choice for me.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Before visiting Berlin, I thought Germany has a typical European cuisine popular for its sausages and it could not surprise me. However, turned out that I was wrong! I explored many dishes that I fell in love with but my top-3 favorite dishes are Königsberger Klopse, Maultasche, and Currywurst. Königsberger Klopse took its name from Prussia. Königsberg is the former capital of Prussia. Königsberger Klopse means cooked meatballs in a white sauce, and definitely deserves the attention of meat lovers! 6. Maultaschen is another tasty dish that surprised me! It’s made of pasta pockets filled with different stuff like pork/beef, vegetables, and spinach. The pockets are usually fried or boiled, but I like fried ones! 7. Undoubtedly, Currywurst deserves to be on the list of my top-3 favorite dishes! I believe no additional words are needed to describe this dish! You just go to Germany and try it.

What places would you recommend visiting in Berlin?

The first place I visited in Berlin was the East Side gallery. You can explore it for free and you will see many original paintings hiding a special message in it all over the Berlin Wall. The Neues Museum where you can discover ancient cultures is another place you must visit in Berlin. If you want to discover German life during the Cold War, then you can visit the DDR Museum and Berliner Unterwelten, where the city’s underground world is hidden! Futuristic building Liquidrom, which stands out among other buildings is one of the must-see places in Berlin. The Museum of the Gestapo (Topography of Terror) is one of the rarest places that terrified me a lot! No words can describe my feelings while being there. I strongly recommend you to visit this museum once you are in Berlin!

Is it good to eat out in Berlin? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

I visited many restaurants, cafes, and bars in Berlin. But there are two places I liked the most. One is called MIRIKA, which surprised me with its rich menu and fair prices along with a cosy atmosphere. Another place I would recommend to visit is Schwarzwaldstuben. You will find classic Southern German food and some options for vegetarians. They have a few tables outside, so if the weather is good you can enjoy your food there.

Is the nightlife good in Berlin? Where is good to go?

It is impossible not to find interesting places to go out to in Berlin. I will share some of my favorite ones. YAAM, which stands for the Young African Arts Market is a beach club with a big concert hall, nice sandy beach area, and basketball court. YAAM is one of my favorite places to go to. If you like jazz, the A-Trane Jazz club is the best place to relax. Legendary Saturday jam sessions will make you fall in love with this place. If you are not a party person, then grab your food and drinks, and go to Tiergarten. Tiergarten is a huge and beautiful urban park, where you can have a picnic or just walk around.

What advice would you give future students heading to Berlin?

During the first 2-3 weeks, you will be busy with exploring the city, getting used to the new environment. Undoubtedly, will get a memorable and valuable experience! So do not even hesitate to move to Berlin. Try to ask your friends to share some tips for finding cheap housing or just surf the internet to find the cheapest and suitable options. Just be open to new and unexpected things. Berlin will surprise you a lot in many ways, so be prepared!
