Erasmus Experience in Berlin, Germany by Filipe
Why did you choose to go to Berlin, Germany?
Because it is the capital of one of the most advanced countries in the world in my line of work/studies.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I didn't get a scholarship.
What is the student lifestyle like in Berlin?
Depends if you meet a lot of friends or not. So far, it is good and you have plenty of time to study and to visit the city.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Berlin to other students?
Yes, definitely.
What is the food like?
Berlin has restaurants in every corner and food from the 4 corners of the earth. So you'll definitely find anything you like here. From fast food to fancy restaurants, you decide. And prices too, you can have very nice food for an amazing price. Even in supermarkets.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Berlin?
Yes, some websites help but from my experience, it wasn't either hard or easy. Just keep looking, you'll find a good spot.
How much does it cost to live in Berlin?
As a student, you'll find almost everything evenly priced. Transportation is okay for 30€ if you buy the monthly ticket in BVG, museums have reduced prices for students and supermarkets are amazingly cheap. You'll be alright on a tight budget if it's your case.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes, you can find courses anywhere in the city, university, and even bookshops. The language might be the most important barrier. German is hard and it isn't something you get used if you have no clue of basic communication. Try intensive courses first or start studying some time before coming.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Berlin from your city?
Plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Berlin?
A-Train.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Berlin?
As I said, you'll find nice food everywhere, just look for nearby restaurants in Yelp or Tripadvisor. Check the prices first and have a nice meal!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The entire city has loads of great cultural sites. Every travel guide has tips and walks around the town. Check Art galleries and theatre also! And by the way, buy online tickets for Philharmoniker some months in advance because they sell out pretty fast!
Oh and don't forget the Berlin Card.
Philharmoniker
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Berlin in the future?
Make sure you choose wisely the time of the year so you won't find Berlin in a rain and cloudy mood. And everything is better if you have friends with you!
