Erasmus Experience in Berlin, Germany by Anna
Why did you choose to go to Berlin, Germany?
Berlin is a capital city of a music world! Here every day you can find amazing classical music concerts, masterclasses and events. As far as I remember it’s been also my dream to become the one who’s able to say: Hi, it’s my city!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My stay in Berlin lasts 2 semesters so it’s 10 months. The scholarship that I receive is 450€ per month which is quite fine, but I spend everything on daily needs as rent, food etc.
What is the student lifestyle like in Berlin?
I’m not someone who’s looking for a party every Friday, but I find Berlin a super social place for everyone! Here no one is weird but unique. As a student you have a card which gives you a discount in students’ locals. Here it doesn’t matter what kind of music you like, which artist is your favourite or what museum fits best to your interests - daily many events take place and I’m sure you can find the one for your needs!
Would you recommend the city and the University of Berlin to other students?
Totally Yes! Berlin can help you to gain experience from others - because of its internationalism Berlin is very colourful. The other reason is a history of the city and Germany which for me as a Polish student is quite important.
What is the food like?
Food is again super international. You can find pizza place and just next to it kebab, vegan restaurant and Asian. The range of what you can taste here is huge and only if you come here you can discover all of the goods provided by chefs. There is a lot of coworking places where you can see young people drinking coffee and working on their laptops, reading books or just talking.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Berlin?
No
How much does it cost to live in Berlin?
The cost of life in Berlin really depends on your needs. Let’s say that for a person who doesn’t buy cloths from Armani every single day 200€ for food should be enough including some extras as tickets for events, museums etc. The cost of your accommodation can be different - it depends on the district where you stay, how far is that from the centre as well as if you rent a whole place or only a room or maybe you’re staying at the students apartment house?
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I came here with some language basics but still my main language in Germany is English. My University provided me with a non-fee German course which already helped me a lot!
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Berlin from your city?
By train or by bus.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Berlin?
I would recommend Potsdamer Platz with its Sony Centre, restaurants and bars!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Berlin?
Amazing Italian place at the Warschauer Straße!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
All of what you need are museums, concerts and people walking around the city.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Berlin in the future?
Feel free to ask anyone if you don’t know something. Make sure that you prepared well with your insurance and enjoy Berlin and its beauty!
