What is it like to live in Beirut? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Living in Beirut is both exciting and frustrating. I wouldn't recommend living there simply because of the many frustrations that you would experience. Some of these are heavy traffic, constant power-outs, which means you wouldn't be able to turn on the air conditioner in summer, hot and humid weather... However, people who come here for tourism purposes love the city, and that is completely understandable. The city is very lively; it is bustling with different noises, colors, and smells. The chaos is a delightful change from organized European cities, for example. There are many fun things to do in summer, such as go to the beach, eat delicious Lebanese food, attend music festivals and concerts, or enjoy a drink in Hamra or Mar Mkhayel, two really nice districts in Beirut. It's also very enjoyable to rent a bike downtown and tour the city.

What is the student lifestyle like in Beirut?

There are several universities in different areas of Beirut. Two major universities are AUB (American University of Beirut) and LAU (Lebanese American University). The street across from AUB, for example, Bliss Street, is filled with restaurants, snack shops, and cafes, so students always go there to get food or to study. It is also very close to Hamra Street, which has many pubs, restaurants, clothing stores, etc. The location of these two universities is very central, and it is pretty easy to get around. AUB has a very good academic reputation, and students are often part of student clubs and societies where they can work towards things they are interested in and meet people with the same interests. There is more of a liberal, secular atmosphere among university-goers in Beirut compared to the rest of the country. Students are usually high achievers and committed to effecting change in Lebanon, be it on a political, cultural/societal, or economic level.

How much does it cost to live in Beirut?

Beirut is quite an expensive city.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Beirut? Is there any advice you can give?

It is quite difficult, yes, and renting an apartment is usually expensive. I would recommend starting to search for accommodation early (4-5 months in advance, probably), and living in a shared apartment in the less expensive areas (Hamra street, for example).

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is amazing, and you can find almost any kind of food (Lebanese, Asian, Mexican, Italian, French...).

What places would you recommend visiting in Beirut?

I would recommend Mar Mkhayel, Hamra, downtown Beirut, the Raouche area.

Is the nightlife good in Beirut? Where is good to go?

I enjoy going to pubs in Hamra or Mar Mkhayel as I like the more laid-back atmosphere there, but there are also several nightclubs in downtown Beirut for a more party-ish vibe.

What advice would you give future students heading to Beirut?

-We use the Lebanese pound (1500 LBP= 1 USD). Make sure you don't get cheated when it comes to paying for goods or services (specifically transportation services).

-Try to avoid commuting at times when there is particularly heavy traffic.

-Finally, simply enjoy it! Visit as many places as you can, and seek out new things. There's always something going on in Beirut.
