What I think about "my" Bari
How does life in Bari seem to you? Would you recommend it? How is it?
Bari is a typical big city of the south of Italy. You will find here many locals and sometimes you will hear some sensational news about local scandals. If you are a traveller this is a great spot from which you can explore the whole region of Apulia, but need to be very careful.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bari?
Unfortunately, the main university, "Aldo Moro", is not well taken care of by whoever's in charge. It is attended mostly by students who commute, whereas those who moved here come mainly from the regions of Molise, Basilicata and Calabria. There are international students, but these are mostly those who are studying here full-time. Erasmus students are not numerous and they are mainly Russian speakers and students coming from Montenegro. ESN Bari however, is very active and I have to say, being in a group with few people helps to get to know each other better.
How much does it cost to live in Bari?
Not much, it is a cheap city with modest prices. You eat and live well.
It is difficult to find accommodation in Bari? What do you suggest?
There are many pages and groups on Facebook dedicated to student accommodation. If you have a low estate income (in italian: ISEE) you can get an accommodation in dorms funded by the region of Apulia. ESN Bari, has a special agreement for Erasmus students with one of the agencies that rents apartments only to exchange students.
How is local food? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is perfect, just like in the whole region of Apulia. "Focaccia" and "panzerotti" are the main ones you absolutely have to try.
In your opinion, what good cultural sites are there to visit?
St Nicolaus Church, the promenade, the great wall along the promenade, Petruzzelli theatre.
And for eating? Can you tell us your favourite places?
A necessary spot for main courses is the bakery "Conticchio", the "focaccia" at Magda's and at Panificio fiore in the old town. In addition, ice-cream and sweets at "Martinucci" as well as muffins from "Cake Design".
Where would you recommend to go on a night out?
"Ferrarese" square, but also the whole centre of the city and the old town.
