Bamberg, living everyday in a fairy tale.

Why did you choose to come to Bamberg, Germany?

Being able to take classes in English or German and the city's location in the middle of Germany, putting it in a ideal places for travelling from and to enjoy the country's traditions, were just some of my motives for coming to Bamberg.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

Personally, coming from the University of Alicante, my scholarship was for 6 months and I got €320 a month (but I know people from other places who got more than €900 a month).

What is the student lifestyle like in Bamberg?

Bamberg is a total student city, more than 10, 000 of its 70, 000 residents are students (plus loads of Erasmus students from all over the world). But there's enough space for everyone in the libraries, and if you're into partying, they have that, too!

Would you recommend the city and the University of Bamberg to other students?

I would recommend it 100%, I know I'm going to go back, I love it there!

What is the food like there?

The typical food in Germany is sausage and meats, (the ham hock from this area is amazing), but for everyday food, the supermarket has everything, like anywhere else.

How did you find your accommodation?

The university here dealt with everything, they give you a few residences to choose from, and then they'll let you know which one you get in the end, it's very well organised.

How much does accommodation cost there? And what are the prices like in general?

I'm in one of the cheapest residences (as it's one of the oldest, but it's not the worst one) and I pay €200 a month, plus €13 a month for internet, the more modern residences here cost around €300 a month, they have a local telephone and internet access included.

The price of shopping isn't much different to the price in Spain, although the meat is more expensive!

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?

All I can say about the language is that German is German... but it's fine, everyone in the city speaks English, and if they don't, they do what they can to help you and understand you.

When I first got here the university offered me a preparatory course available at all levels (but it did cost €200).

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to from your city?

Flying with Ryanair to Memmingen (in Munich) or to Frankfurt Hahn and then taking the train to Bamberg (which takes another 3 and a half hours), but if you want to keep it simple, there's an international airport in Nuremberg, which is only an hour away from Bamberg by train, but low cost companies don't fly there.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Bamberg?

There are so many to choose from... on Mondays, you can get a pint of beer for €1. 20 at Fässla, and there's a happy hour every night at FruchtBAR; on Tuesdays, it's flip a coin day at FruchtBAR (when you order something, the waiter flips a coin, one side has a smiley face :) and the other has a sad face :(, if you get the smiley face, you don't have to pay, if you get the sad face, you pay the normal price), and there's the 2 for 1 party at Ludwig; on Wednesdays, there's the party at SkyLounge and Morph Club; and on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, there's a student vibe anywhere you go... But I liked going to Ludwig on Thursdays!

And to eat in Bamburg? What are some of your favourite places to go?

The typical place to eat ham hock is Scheiner's Gaststuben, where you can feed 4 people (despite the menu saying it's for 2 people) with one dish, which costs €19. Otherwise, there are Italian places and Turkish places on every corner, as well as fast food, currywurst, Mexican places and you can remind yourself how olives and tapas taste at Casa España!

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Bamberg is full of culture, (in fact there's a module you can take here on "German cultre and the Bamberg state", which I would 100% recommend), but, if I have to suggest one thing, the Altemburg castle has amazing views of the whole city, or the Schloss Seehof, which is a charming stately home.

Do you have any advice for students coming to Bamberg in the future?

A nice walk or bike ride through the city can easily turn into an adventure, you'll discover lots of new places. Don't just stay in the city centre and around the residence, Bamberg is somewhere really worth visiting! Have a great time!
