Bamberg, a charming city

Hi everyone!

I'm writing this article, because, when I was told I was going to Bamberg, I pretty much had nobody to ask for information about it and there was even less on Erasmusu (it was only 4 or 5 years), so I'm going to tell you new Erasmus students all about my experience!

Firstly, I have to tell you that I'm from Almería, I'm 22 years old, I study Bilingual Marketing and I didn't get back from my Erasmus until August 2016! I got to Bamberg on the 29th of September, I was completely alone, I didn't know anyone there and I didn't come with any friends, and it was amazing how, in a matter of weeks, I started to get to know and befriend people from all different countries!

An important piece of advice

Don't close yourself off, always keep an open mind to forming new friendships and hanging out with new people, even if you have already made your own friendship group. It's the best way to be, and especially if they're not Spanish, that way you'll learn twice as much!

The city

For me, Bamberg is an enchanting and welcoming city. It's true that it's not very big, don't imagine it'll be like Madrid or Barcelona, but it was just what I was looking for, and the medieval character of its streets makes each of them unique.

The prices

Bamberg is very affordable, in general, and the prices of things are similar to the prices in Almería, apart from the meat here, which is a bit more expensive than in Spain. Eating in the university canteen only costs €3 or €4 (there isn't a menu, just different dishes). For your free time, it's very affordable as well: entry to pubs costs between €3-5 (from 11 p. m. and they close at 2 a. m. on weekdays and at 4 a. m. on the weekends). Entry to Bambados (a mini water park in Bamberg, it's really cool), only costs €3 for an hour an a half.

Transport

You'll always use the bus to get around here, which is free for students! There are special taxis that are around until 2 a. m. and a trip only costs €1 for students. The normal taxis cost more, about €10 to €15 for a trip from the city centre to my residence (Pestalozzi). As for the trains, you can use them to travel in the region of Bavaria and they're super affordable if you travel in a group.

The only "bad thing" I could say about Bamburg is that you'll only see the sun once a week in the winter, because it's always cloudy and drizzling.

Of course I would recommend Bamburg as an Erasmus destination. Use all of this information to start your Erasmus adventure!
