What is it like to live in Baku? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Baku is the interesting city because it has a harmony of both West and the East. People here are tolerant to other ethnicities and religions. There are churches s and mosques here. Some parts of the city are well developed with good high buildings, clean streets, plenty of shopping and eating places. But some parts are still not renovated. In general metro works good and nowadays there are new large buses which are working better and more comfortable.

What is the student lifestyle like in Baku?

Some universities like UNEC and ADA have good conditions for international students. There are museums, historical places to visit on your free time. Some students can already find a job while studying here. Student discounts in restaurants or other places are rare.

How much does it cost to live in Baku?

If you don’t spend much on other entertainments it can cost approximately 100-150 euro a month ( not including accommodation)

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Baku? Is there any advice you can give?

Most of the hotels here are expensive. There are some hostels but it’s is good for short term stay. Also there are no private dormitories.If you are planning to spend long time here for study it could be best to rent an apartment from local people. You can ask a help from your university mentors or friends to help you to communicate with local people.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Azerbaijani cuisine is really good. You can also find some European, Asian, Indian restaurants. In supermarkets like Bravo you can find almost everything.

What places would you recommend visiting in Baku?

Firstly visit old town baku. There are plenty of historical places there. Also visit Heydar Aliyev center a good example of modern architecture and inside of it there are several different exhibitions. During the evening time visit Boulevard for night view

Is it good to eat out in Baku? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is good. If you want to try national cuisine visit restaurant in old town. Also there are plenty of different affordable restaurants or small cafes in Nizami street

Is the nightlife good in Baku? Where is good to go?

Nizami street of the city is the main place for nightlife also baku boulevard is good for night walk and view of the city and sea. However transport is working only till midnight so you should take into account that. Also I wouldn’t recommend to go out alone during the night time just for your safety.

What advice would you give future students heading to Baku?

Firstly try to learn metro of the city it is not complicated and can help you a lot first days. If you need help try to ask from young people as they know English better than adults. If you want to work there are lots of international companies here that you can search. Have some cash with you as in some places they won’t accept card payments.
