Experience in Bacau, Romania by Gabby
What is it like to live in Bacau? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Small city, not so expensive prices, most of the time it's boring, but if you have the right persons around and some money you can travel and live an amazing experience because Romania has marvellous mountains and beautiful cities.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bacau?
Most teachers speak English or French so if you don't know Romanian don't worry too much, and most students know English too. The university is newly built.
Well, if you like doing other things except studying, watching movies and hanging out and have fun with friends, you can join the student ligue activities, or go to gym (Aqua fitness club, Tnt club sport), the pool, theater, pubs, see handball matches. You can find more here.
How much does it cost to live in Bacau?
Around 200€ per month.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bacau? Is there any advice you can give?
If you are an exchange stundent, the university (Vasile Alecsandri) will help you find a place to live (usually Erasmus students are accommodated in student dorms: Hostel no. 3 – 8, Spiru Haret St and Hostel no. 4 – 9A, Violetelor St. ), but it is difficult to find accommodation on Internet, so you have to contact someone from there to help you find a free room or an apartment in Bacau.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food it's ok, you can eat at the student canteen, a full lunch costs between 3-4 € (my favourite dishes are "ciorba radauteana", "gratar cu piure de cartofi" and " mamaliga cu branza"). Also in the city there are many fast food restaurants where you can eat accesible.
In the city you can't find a sushi restaurant so if you like sushi like I do you have to go another city, like Brasov or Bucharest.
What places would you recommend visiting in Bacau?
Cancicov Park, Magura, Arena mall, the philharmonic, st. Nicholas cathedral... there are not so many places in Bacau to visit actually, but you can travel and see the nearby cities, like Piatra Neamt, Brasov, Iasi or you can go to see the mountains.
Is it good to eat out in Bacau? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, you can find some good restaurants like Hanovra, Miorita, Mesopotamia, Magura Verde.
Is the nightlife good in Bacau? Where is good to go?
Yes, if you have crazy friends and some money you can have fun, mostly in weekends or at student parties at Inside, The One, Vanity, Police, Valhalla Pub.
What advice would you give future students heading to Bacau?
Have fun and travel!
