Experience in Almería, Spain, by Elisa
What is it like to live in Almería? Would you recommend it? How is it?
Almería is a peaceful city, and perfect for if you like both the beach and the mountains. Even though it doesn't have huge monuments but you can enjoy many of the smaller things such as the Alcazaba, the Civil War Shelters, the beautiful beaches such as Cabo de Gata, the amazing weather that can be enjoyed all year round, etc.
What is the student lifestyle like in Almería?
There's a very friendly atmosphere, in general the people are very open and ready to help other people if they need it. Also, I have to mention that everyone tends to like to go on a night out for for a few beers in "non-student hours".
How much does it cost to live in Almería?
If you rent a room in a shared flat, you will definitely find prices between €150-250, which will include the shared extra bills.
Did you find it hard to find somewhere to live in Almería? Do you have any advice?
In my experience, no. I live in a town, Roquetas de Mar, about 30km from the university so I take a bus every day.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Everyone eats very well in Spain! From the amazing paella, "migas", lentils, potato tortilla, to the freshest vegetables, it has to be said that we have a vast and high quality culinary variety.
What places would you recommend visiting in Almería?
It's essential to pay a visit to the Alcazaba (always with someone who can tell you about its history), the beaches of Cabo de Gata, so you can tan or go snorkelling. Roquetas de Mar and Almerimar are very pretty places to go to, especially during the summer.
Is it good to eat out in Almería?
What are some of your favourite places to go?
I know of more places in Roquetas and Aguadulce such as "Mis Viejos", "Cosecha 2012", "El peseta", "Los Sanchez", "Padock".
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Almería?
In the winter I would recommend going to the capital, and where the four main streets intersect, you will find all kinds of pubs. On the other hand, during the hotter times of the year people go to Aguadulce, in zone 501 or in the port of Aguadulce in the Mojacar area.
What advice would you give future students headed to Almería?
Don't bring too many warm clothes, as we only have 2 or 3 months of winter. If you're not very accustomed to the sun, use a lot of protection if you don't want to burn. And finally, enjoy everything you can, from spending your days with friends eating between classes and losing yourself spending days on the beach.
