There is everything in the centre of Almería: student lifestyle and ordinary people on their own, going to their workplaces and so on. If you look for more student's ambiance, you will find it at the university and maybe in Zapillo's area.

On average, Almería is not an expensive place to live, but it also depends: it is not the same living in Civitas residence than in a flat, neither living in the centre of Almería rather than in Zapillo's. I think that the beach is the best in Almería. If you go to Cabo de Gata and have never seen it before, it will be impressive for you. Moreover, there are places where you can eat very well.
