Erasmus Experience in Almeria, Spain by Tanveen
Why did you choose to go to Almeria, Spain?
I chose Almeria because my internship (research project) was based on agriculture and its techniques and Almeria has a good university for the same.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The project was for a period of three months. I received 500 euros per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Almeria?
It is easy going. People really love to enjoy their lives here, which, in my opinion, is very necessary. Besides, there are a lot of students from outside of Spain. People are very welcoming.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Almeria to other students?
Yes, I would definitely recommend the city and the university. People can taste the real Andalusian culture and enjoy the beautiful beaches as well.
What is the food like?
Well, in Almeria you can get a lot of seafood. Other things are the same that you would find anywhere in Spain- Tostadas (for breakfast), bocadillos (big sandwiches), lentils, jamon, arroz con leche etc.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Almeria?
No, I found the accommodation online.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
To be honest, it took me a long time to get to grips with Spanish. But with a little extra effort, it becomes quite easy. English is not that common except among youngsters.
Yes, there are many language courses available.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Almeria from your city?
Within Spain, the best way to travel would be use the BlaBla car. It is cheap, more convenient and you can have a conversation with your buddies to kill time.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Almeria?
Of course! The night life is great, specially in the center of the city, or if people like to be near the beach.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Almeria?
Well these are some personal favourites, I am sure you would like it: tinto de verano, Cafe BonBon, Dulce de Leche, Manchego cheese, jamon serrano (and once you are acquainted with the taste, try jamon iberico), Paella, and tapas, of course!
A good restaurant would be La Cabaña del Tio Tom, along Paseo Maritimo.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Alcazaba, the cinema museum.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Almeria in the future?
Learn a bit of Spanish before going there, make sure to visit Cabo de Gata, look out for cultural events in Almeria (there are many flamenco shows that you can get to see, for free), try the tapas. You can also visit nearby villages which have something good to offer round the year like- Aguadulce, Mojacar etc.
