Erasmus Experience in Almeria, Spain
Why did you decide to go to Almeria in Spain?
I wanted to study in a place that wasn't too different to Italy, where the climate wasn't too cold and the sea was close by.
How long did the Erasmus grant last? How much money did you receive?
My Erasmus grant lasted 6 months, but I obtained an extension for another 4 months. The amount of money, that you receive, varies on where you study, with a fixed rate of €230 per month from the European union, for 6 months.
What the student life like in Almeria?
Very hospitable. The university consists of 12, 000 students, who are all very open towards Erasmus students. Between us Erasmus students the atmosphere is very warm and fun. We know each other well and organise a lot of activities together.
Would you recommend the city of Almeria to other students?
Yes, the city has its particularities (such as the presence of pubs, all of which are very small, the connections are a bit difficult), but it definitely gives you unique experience.
What's the food like there?
Quite different form Italian food, they use a lot more onions and potatoes than we do. Almost all of the dishes are very fresh, because of the heat that's present here for the whole year.
How did you find accommodation?
Though the announcement page of the University. There is also a web page from the university with contacts of available houses.
What are the costs of rent? what are the general costs?
The rent is a lot lower than the Spanish average, an average size house costs €150 per month including costs. The costs of living are also very low, just as it is in south Italy.
How did you find the language? Did you attend any courses at the university?
I learnt the Spanish language very quickly, even if here they speak a vey peculiar dialect. The University offers a free course, that runs from October to March, offered only to Erasmus students.

Taking the airplane at Napoli and changing in Madrid for Almeria.
Where do you recommend for going out in Almeria during the evening?
The city is full of small bars that offer different types of Music; generally, the most lively area to go is 4 calles.
And eating in Almeria? Can you tell us about some of your favourite places?
In Almeria there are a lot of tapas bars, which are places where you can eat in small portions, included in the price of the beer. The quality of the food is good, especially in the city centre bars where they offer the best choices.
Are there cultural places to see?
There is l'Alcazaba, the cathedral, the nature park of Cabo de Gata, some museums in the centre.
Almeria is a relatively new city, so there aren't many old sites, like in many Andalusian cities.
What advice would you give to future students in Almeria?
To leave with a lot of enthusiasm, the Erasmus experience is incredible in every way and then, if you go to the sea in summer, it's better still.
