Valeria's Experience in Alicante, Spain

What attracts you to living in Alicante? Do you recommend it? What's it like?

I chose to come to Alicante for my Erasmus because I wanted somewhere where the weather wasn't cold, that had a beach and wasn't too expensive to live in. I wanted to go to a quality, prestigious university and I also knew beforehand that Alicante was full of Erasmus students and so there were parties every day of the week.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Alicante to other students?

Of course, the university is very big and is really beautiful. As for the course I'm doing at uni, I'm studying Law and Criminology, which are both very interesting and the lecturers are really good and approachable if you have any doubts when in the classroom.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Alicante? Do you have any advice?

Before I came to Alicante I knew of a flat that I could stay in, but when I got here there were some problems so I had to look for another one and actually managed to get one on the same day.

It depends on what you are looking for as to which area is the best to live. I live in the Plaza de Toros (bullring) area, which is in the centre of the city and is close to everything. But I think that it would also have been good to experience living in San Vicente del Raspeig where the university is.

How much does it cost to live in Alicante?

Approximately 300 euros a month.

What's the language like? Did you go on a course at the university?

As I speak Spanish I didn't have any problems with the language.

However, I know that at the university they offer courses in both Spanish and Catalan.

Where do you recommend for nightlife in Alicante?

There is an area in the centre of the city called "El Barrio" (the old town) where there are lots of bars to go drinking or to dance. There is also a bar called Mulligans, or there are also lots of clubs on the port as well.

What about sightseeing in Alicante?

Near to the Plaza de Toros there is a cultural house called "Cigarretas" where there are workshops, exhibitions and theatre performances.

Do you have any advice for future students in Alicante?

If you come for the semester that starts in September, whether you are used to the cold weather or not, don't worry, it doesn't get as cold as other parts of Spain. However, I recommend coming for the semester that starts in February because you can make better use of your time.
