Sol's Experience in Alicante, Spain
What attracts you to living in Alicante? Do you recommend it? What's it like?
Alicante is a city open to visitors. A place that many generations have passed through and where different cultures mix together. Alicante is easy to get to know, welcoming and has a wide range of services and activities.
I recommend living there.
It is a very active and lively city, with lots of activities and places to meet up and enjoy time with your friends as well as meeting new people.
What's the student lifestyle like in Alicante?
The University of Alicante is located in San Vicente del Raspeig, despite the name, which is a town just out of the centre of Alicante. It's very close to Alicante though, so you can get there and back to the city very easily via the bus or tram.
There are lots of students in this region and throughout Spain. Alicante is a recognised city for Erasmus and international students all year round. It tends to be popular among these students because of the good climate and gastronomy.
Alicante is a city that successfully combines young visitors with the locals and that mix makes it very interesting to live in Alicante.
There is also another university in the region which increases the number of students there.
How much does it cost to live in Alicante?
It depends on how you want to live. Alicante has lots of options, so there is something for every budget. So then the question is, what to choose?
Depending on what you prefer you could go for an apartment on the beach or something closer to the university. Or perhaps a flat in the city centre (Calle Castanos), or something closer to the station.
Rooms cost between 150 and 300 euros a month, and bills aren't usually any more than 100 euros per month. You'll probably spend the most money on your social life. They key is knowing what you want and how to look for it during your stay in Alicante.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Alicante? Do you have any advice?
I didn't find it difficult to sort out my accommodation as there are lots of offers... but at the same time, there is a high demand.
My advice is to work out what you want for your stay in Alicante, look at your budget and then you can begin to look for a place. Make sure you look around a lot.
There are lots of neighbourhoods so it is important to know where you want to go and whether you are willing to catch the bus to get to the centre or use the tram to travel to surrounding villages etc.
What’s the country’s food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is really good. Wherever you go in Spain you will get good food, as long as you stay away from the chain restaurant and still to the bars that sell homemade food.
Of course, I have to mention tapas and beer.
What places do you recommend visiting in Alicante?
The Castle of Santa Barbara is a must-see, as is the town hall and the government sub-delegation. You can take a walk around the port and visit El MARQ and MUBAG.
What about eating out in Alicante? What are your favourite places?
In addition to the thousands of rice dishes here, I would recommend the typical fish dishes, like Pericana, Caldero, Esmorçaret Alicantí etc. You can also enjoy other national and international cuisines as there are various restaurants that sell food from other regions of Spain and around the world.
Where do you recommend for nightlife in Alicante?
Calle Castaños, the old town (El Barrio), the port. In the summer I also recommend the beach bars.
Do you have any advice for future students in Alicante?
More than anything, enjoy it! Your time there will go really quickly so make the most of every moment. You will have an unforgettable experience, the bad things will make you learn and the good things will make you have a much better experience.
Good luck!
