Pilar's Experience in Alicante, Spain
What attracts you to living in Alicante? Do you recommend it? What's it like?
Alicante is a really great city to live in. Good prices, student atmosphere, and it also has the advantage of never having bad weather.
It takes half an hour to get from the city centre to the university via public transport. The uni has a large American-style campus that houses all the different faculties and other facilities for university life.
Alicante is on the coast and is an easy city to live in as it isn't too big. It also has a tourist and international atmosphere throughout the year.
What's the student lifestyle like in Alicante?
Normally students live in the accommodation next to the university (San Vicente del Rapseig). Here they usually organise lots of parties and there are lots of bars with cheap prices. However, for future Erasmus students here, I would recommend living in the centre of Alicante as there are more things to do. The students that choose to live in the centre of the city tend to live in the Mercado area or on La Rambla.
How much does it cost to live in Alicante?
The rent prices range between 100 and 200 euros per month, depending on the area you live in. San Vicente is the cheapest option. A weekly shop is also pretty cheap. Depending on what you eat, it can cost you around 35 euros a week. In general, the nightlife is pretty cheap compared to other European cities, even other cities in Spain. A small beer usually costs around €1-1. 50.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Alicante? Do you have any advice?
It's quite easy to find something. You can look for something online on web pages like Idealista and Mil Anuncios.
What about eating out in Alicante? What are your favourite places?
The food is amazing. The prices are very cheap and the food is great quality. Alicante is famous for its rice and paella dishes. Come and find your favourite!
What places do you recommend visiting in Alicante?
The castle, Postiguet beach, the Rambla, the old town, the Ereta park. You can also visit the surrounding towns such as Altea, Calpe, Denia, Elche etc. Or the castle route which is further inland in the region (Sax, Biar, Villena, Petrer... ).
Where do you recommend for nightlife in Alicante?
In the old town (El Barrio) you will find lots of variety. But if you are tired of reggaeton and electronic Latino music and you like places with good music, I recommend La Sala Stereo and El Kraken.
Do you have any advice for future students in Alicante?
Enjoy your Erasmus experience. Once Erasmus, always Erasmus.
