Aroa's Experience in Alicante, Spain
What attracts you to living in Alicante? Do you recommend it? What's it like?
It is one of the cities with the best climate, there is sun nearly 365 days a year. It is a small city where you have everything easily at hand. For the lovers of sun and the beach, it is one of the perfect cities.
What's the student lifestyle like in Alicante?
Being in a small city and having two universities, there is a lot of students, lots of parties and Thursdays are especially great for university students.
How much does it cost to live in Alicante?
Alicante isn't a cheap city, but you can live well there. Renting flats is quite cheap; room prices can start from around 130 euros a month.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Alicante? Do you have any advice?
It wasn't difficult for me to find accommodation because it is a small city with lots of students. It is best to share a flat as the student accommodation is very expensive.
What’s the country’s food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Spanish food is perfect. It is one of the things that Spaniards miss the most when they leave Spain for their Erasmus year. Paella, Spanish omelette, the salads... you are going to love the food!
What places do you recommend visiting in Alicante?
The Castle of Santa Barbara and the city centre, where you'll find the town hall and the oldest and prettiest parts of the city. San Juan beach which is 15 minutes away from the centre of Alicante on the tram. The "Explanada" and the port. I recommend that you get the bus and visit all the coastal towns in the region too (Calpe, Altea, Vilajoyosa, Benidorm... ). There are hidden corners with beautiful beaches and great coves to go and relax or spend time with friends.
What about eating out in Alicante? What are your favourite places?
For students who are lovers of tapas and beer, La Tabernita de Triana is perfect. El Baviera which is in the centre is also great, and cheap too.
Where do you recommend for nightlife in Alicante?
The old town, which is in the centre of Alicante. It is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city and is where all the pubs and bars are. The bad thing is that they close at 3 am, so if you want to carry on the party you could go to clubs like Mulligans, Santa Club, Concerto, Quinta Avenida, or the port, which is another area where there are lots of bars. In summer I recommend going to El Golf, which is in San Juan, but if you live in Alicante, there is a train that runs every hour.
Do you have any advice for future students in Alicante?
Enjoy the weather, the parties and the food, and most importantly, the beach. Oh, and if you can stay until June, you'll be there for the HOGUERAS DE SANT JOAN festival which takes places between the 19th and 23rd of the month... you will love it!
