Erasmus Experience in Aalborg, Denmark by Erik
Why did you choose to go to Aalborg, Denmark?
I wanted to go to a Nordic country. I had to choose between Aalborg or Halmstad. I preferred Aalborg.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scholarship is for 5 months (I think). I received 1980€! 90% during the Erasmus, and the rest after. Notice that I only received it between the 2nd and 3rd month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Aalborg?
The city is really small and calm. Typical Danish life style. You can ride a bike almost everywhere and it is very, very safe. Good public transports. Because there are 2 big universities in the city, it has lot's of students, but Danish people are very "close". So, I did not had much contact with them.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Aalborg to other students?
Yes, of course. I was not in University of Aalborg, but in UCN! I was a bit disappointed with the teaching method. In Portugal I was used to big classes with at least more than 50 students. At UCN I had a class like in high school. It has the positive aspect that you get closer to people, but you meet less people. And again, you have no contact with Danish students in the university. Nevertheless I made some good friends, and had a great time there.
What is the food like?
I was in a accommodation called Aab College. I had food there included. I only went out for dinner once. Very good, and very expensive. Then Mac and Kebabs.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Aalborg?
No. UCN took care of that.
How much does it cost to live in Aalborg?
I spent like 1000€ month. 600€ was accommodation and 400€ extra expenses. These last ones was in night life, but you can spend less in both cases.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It's very difficult. Yes.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Aalborg from your city?
Plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Aalborg?
When I was there (2011) there was just one place. It's a street full of bars (free entrance). It's great (besides being expensive). Now I think there are some clubs also. But of course the best parties are house parties. Sometimes there are parties in buildings. Like 3 floors of craziness.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Aalborg?
Mac and Kebabs.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
None. There is not much to see.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Aalborg in the future?
It's a great experience and adventure. You also have the opportunity to travel. For people that like calm and safe places but also if they want to get crazy sometimes, it's a good option.

Hi Erik! I'm also going to UCN (I already got the placement), and I'd like to ask you something. Did you have to pass any kind of test to prove your english level? I'm a bit worried about it. I think my english level is good enough, but I don't have any accreditation.
Thank you very much!

The panoramic image in the gallery does NOT show Aalborg in Denmark. There are no mountains there. The picture shows Ålesund in Norway.
