Experience in Aachen, Germany from Kozel
What is it like to live in Aachen? Would you recommend it to others? What is the city like?
Aachen is relatively small but very cozy. Aachen is very pleasant to live in, especially because of its brilliant location between Cologne/Bonn/Düsseldorf and Belgium and the Netherlands.
How is the student life in Aachen?
It's impossible to ignore that the ratio of male-to-female students is significantly high.
The party life in Aachen is legendary, Pontstraße, Milchstraße, etc.
How expensive is it to live in Aachen?
That depends on what exactly you compare it to, though I'd say it is average for Germany.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Aachen? Can you give any tips on finding accommodation?
Yes, it's relatively difficult, especially because the apartment prices in Aachen are quite high. You should definitely try to find a shared flat, which are usually very affordable. 1-room apartments, on the other hand, are very expensive and rare.
How is the food? What are your favorite dishes?
In Aachen you can find whatever you want. The classic stuff is in the area Markt/Ponte/Kockrellstraße.
Whoever likes Sushi and is ready to pay a little bit more must try Ozaki! The best all-you-can-eat ever.
Which places should one definitely visit in Aachen?
You can visit most of the must-sees quite easily since almost everything is in the city center - cathedral, Elisenbrunnen, town hall, etc.
Additionally, an insider tip: whoever is here during the summer should go to Aachen's Kornelimünster district for the historical fair. It is usually on the last weekend of May, but every year is different. Historical fairground rides, the most beautiful flea market I know, street food of all kinds -- I love it!
Can you find good restaurants in Aachen? Do you want to tell us your favorite local spots?
Like I said: Ozaki! Tijuana - the best Mexican place, and filled with students.
Is the night life good in Aachen? Where are the best places to party?
I am not that familiar with the night life, but on Pontstraße and Milchstraße there is always something happening. In particular, there is Nox or Starfish, which are the classic spots where almost everyone goes.
What is one piece of advice or information that you want to give to future students in Aachen?
Aachen is probably not the first city you think of, but it is so diverse and the location offers many opportunities for everyone, more so than almost any other German city. For example, you can be in three countries at once.
