Experience in Aachen, Germany by Rocio
What is it like to live in Aachen? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Aachen is the kind of place where you can reach everything by foot. It is shaped as a ring and the city centre remains inside it. The most remarkable place is Marktplatz where you can find the Rathaus and Karl der Große Cathedral (a must see). The atmosphere is full of youth and color due to the university. Most of the citizens are members of the university community.
What is the student lifestyle like in Aachen?
It is really International and full of life and events. (Right now less because of the pandemic). There are sport events, international events, place to meet new people and study. Nevertheless, there are many parks to have a beer or grill as well as some pubs to have a nice get together with your friends.
How much does it cost to live in Aachen?
It depends on where you live. Residence halls are cheap accommodation options, while flats are more expensive. However, I highly recommend living in a WG with German students to get in touch with the culture. Restaurants and drinks are cheap. There are Me sad or university's canteens to eat really really cheap and with good quality.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Aachen? Is there any advice you can give?
It takes time, but it is not impossible. I recommend to seek for a place at least one month before going. Offers appear mostly in September or October when students know they are finally ending their bachelor or master.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
German food is not my favorite. However, beer is G R E A T. They know how to brew good stuff.
What places would you recommend visiting in Aachen?
Karl der Große Cathedral.
Rathaus.
Musik Bunker.
Ponttor.
Lousberg Park.
Elisenbrunnen.
Is it good to eat out in Aachen? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
In Pontstrasse there are many restaurants with different special offers each day. I recommend going to Essbar on Wednesdays to have a Weizen for 1'90. Homeburguers next to the bus station. Ichifa sushi buffet on Pontstrasse. Hanswurst next to Elisenbrunnen.
Is the nightlife good in Aachen? Where is good to go?
It is okeii. There are options but no big discos. If you like techno go to Musikbunker. If not,... try getting invite to residence halls parties, WG parties or go to Köln.
