What is it like to live in Utrecht? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Good, it's a lively student city. The historical center is very beautiful, it's big enough to offer anything you might need, but small enough not to feel lost in a big city.

What is the student lifestyle like in Utrecht?

Depends very much on the chosen study. Some departments are very open and informal, others are more strict.

How much does it cost to live in Utrecht?

Rent costs between 300-500 euros a month, depending on location and size, and you'll need another 150 euros a month for food and other living expenses.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Utrecht? Is there any advice you can give?

Yes, very much. There is a high need for affordable student rooms, and the traditional system in the Netherlands is one of 'interviewing' before you get a room: you (and many others) meet with the current inhabitants of a student house, and they decide who gets the free room.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Dutch food in general is pretty boring, but if you there, try the 'pannenkoeken', 'stroopwafels', 'drop', and if it's winter: 'erwtensoep' and 'stampot'.

What places would you recommend visiting in Utrecht?

Bruna museum (with Nijntje), the old hortus botanicus in the city center, the Rietveld House, the Dom, a tour past the oudegracht, canoeing in the canals, shopping in the old city center…

Is it good to eat out in Utrecht? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

De muntkelder for pancakes, and Utrecht has a few affordable student restaurants, where you can get a meal for less then 10 euros: Mick O'Connels, Hofman Cafe, Florin, and the Havana.

Is the nightlife good in Utrecht? Where is good to go?

Havana, De Beurs, but it all depends on your taste in music.

What advice would you give future students heading to Utrecht?

Have fun!
