More info about the neighborhood
In the 3rd district, near the Saint-Charles train station, the Belle de Mai has long been the headquarters of the Marseille tobacco factory. Its proximity to Joliette and Gare Saint-Charles gives it a central position.
The district is home to the famous «Friche Belle de Mai»: A disused factory, which has become an industrial wasteland, was renovated and transformed into a cultural and heritage place since the 1990s. It now houses the Municipal Archives of Marseille, a Media Centre and the Friche, an important cultural space. As for its name, it seems that it evokes a «vinea bela de mai», designating a late vine «beautiful of rest». A very nice name for this historic «red» district, today much more colorful, whose future is between real estate development and village nucleus with a thousand and one places animated by local life.
The area also houses the busy restaurant "Les grandes tables de la Friche" which combines industrial-style architecture and a diversified cuisine offering seasonal menus, healthy and affordable, as well as a large terrace/ bar in summer. Also in summer, events, aperitifs, evenings and open-air concerts on the famous "ROOFTOP TERRACE of the Friche.
350 m from the apartment, we also reach the Levat Convent, which houses work spaces of artists via the Juxtapoz workshop, with free access to the Levat Gardens and its vegetable gardens, where we can also have a drink under the cool trees in summer, to learn about the ecological approaches proposed to the residents and inhabitants of the neighborhood...
You can find all nearby shops within 300m walking distance: supermarket, pharmacies, post office, banks, bakery...etc, especially on the Place Cadenat which also hosts a daily market from Monday to Saturday morning and a flower market on Thursday morning.
Places of interest: the Gare et la Friche de la Belle de Mai, Cinema d'art et d'essai, Le Gyptis, 300m
