Christmas in Zurich
The introduction
Hello everyone, in this article I want to tell you about this idea of going to Zurich during this Christmas time.
As you know, it’s the end of November and the Christmas traditions and things have already been started. You will see Christmas decorations everywhere and it just feels Christmas anywhere you go. There are some traditions that people here in Switzerland have and since I study here and my host family lives here, who I visit from time to time, I got to know some Swiss traditions, which they have here.
The very first thing, that they do and we don’t have it in Georgia is, that they have those chocolates and they are kind of numbered and they start eating those chocolates and they eat one of them each day from beginning of December until the Christmas day. I had this chocolate pack bought last year and I took it to my home country and gave it to my mother and told her about this tradition. The package itself was really beautiful, too, it had these pictures on it and stuff like that, and, of course, the chocolate was really delicious. Well, to be honest, I took lots of chocolates last year to my family and friends and everyone, I guess, and I even took some Italian chocolate or cocoa for my sister.
The idea of Zurich
Anyways, some time ago when I visited my host family, they told me that it was a great idea to go to Zurich during these Christmas days and that the time there was magical during that and I wanted to go there, of course, because they told me all those things and made me want to spend some Christmas time there. I asked my sister and my brother if they want to come with us and although the visa process took some time, they wanted to come.
About Zurich
You know, everything is beautiful on Christmas and Zurich is one of the cities, where everything is just amazing at this time, especially if it’s snow. There’s nothing more exciting and beautiful, than watching the snowflakes falling down and wandering in the streets of a city full of Christmas lights and Christmas decorations. All those people in Santa Clause forms and singing and dancing and people walking around with cheerful chattering and smiles on their faces and all are happy. It’s just really amazing and everyone should experience that. Well, we don’t really have those Christmas markets in Georgia, if you want to know the truth, and that’s one of the reasons, too, why I wanted to spend some time there in Zurich with my family members, so that we would all see this amazing marketplaces and Christmas time in Europe.
Well, I guess, you know, that Zurich is in the north of Switzerland and everyone knows that it’s a very expensive city. Even Swiss people say that out loud, that Zurich is a very expensive city to live in or even visit for a couple of days. You should maybe not go there with much money, I guess, so that you won’t spend much money there.
There was this Hotel Gregory, which we found on Booking.com and it offered a room for three people and it was the cheapest one and had a great interior and had a pub downstairs, too, and was in a mile from the city center, so that everything looked just perfect, however it cost 145 CHF a day and it’s not very cheap. It was really good for us, because you can even walk from there and sightsee and look around the city and stuff like that. You have to just wander around and take pictures and enjoy the views and, well, when it’s Christmas in the streets with all those Christmas lights and decorations and people walking around and those huge Christmas trees in the centers and stuff like that, it’s impossible not to enjoy everything and even if it’s freezing cold in the streets, you still feel the warmth of the city and there’s still something special there, that makes you feel excited and happy at the same time. Imagine, walking through those Christmas markets just like in the movies and seeing all those shiny and glittery stuff, that you want to have for yourself and looking at those Christmas trees and singing people around and tell me that it is not atime of you appreciating life.
