What is it like to live in Würzburg? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I lived in Würzburg from October to March 2011 and it was the most beautiful experience of my life. I recommend it because it is a beautiful big and quiet city with good food (the bakeries offer optimal German specialities like Bretzel), well-organized public transports and kind Germans (first of all German old people when asking for info in English).

What is the student lifestyle like in Würzburg?

Würzburg offers students from different countries the opportunity to spend their time and know other young people at the university cafés or at events such as festivals or Erasmus meetings organized by the International Office of the University of Würzburg. The tutors represent a point of reference for Erasmus students arrived for the first time in the city because they pick them at the station and accompany to their student dormitory by car, help them fill out some university modules etc.

How much does it cost to live in Würzburg?

The cost to live in this city is not too much high. The cafés, restaurants, pubs and supermarkets in the city are very cheap. The students travel free on public transports.

An advice: Remember to store plastic bottles of water in your home.. In supermarkets, there are some machines that pick up the bottles and print a receipt. Present it to the cashier and you will have a discount for each water bottle you buy!

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Würzburg? Is there any advice you can give?

Würzburg has many student dormitories. Before going to Würzburg, I received a letter from the Studentenhaus Würzburg where I had to choose the student dormitory for the Erasmus period.

Am Hubland campus was perfect for me because it was located near the supermarket Tegut (it was enough cheap) and was made up of numerous small buildings and three bigger apartment blocks. A single room with a kitchen and a bathroom in a student dormitory like Am Hubland costs 186 euro+ 300 euro for the deposit (it can be refunded if there have been no damages into the room). The Internet access was via broadband cable by the company mywire. You registered and activated your connection directly from the residence via the company mywire.

My advice is taking part of parties organized in Am Hubland or other student dormitories because it is a good chance to speak in German or English with other foreign students like you.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is very good.

The bakeries at each corner of the city offer a great variety of sweets and sandwiches and the cafés offer tasty waffles with powdered sugar..

I also advice you the German so-called Bratwurst (sandwiches with roasted sausages accompanied with mustard or ketchup). They are delicious!

Is it good to eat out in Würzburg? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

In Würzburg there are good spots to eat out. My favourite places are Bratwurststand Knupfing at the market square of the city and Fontana café & restaurant.

Fontana café & restaurant offers a great variety of pizzas at economic prices.

The first time I came to Würzburg I tried the canteen at am Hubland campus. It is the largest canteen of the Studentenwerk and offers several dishes at choice, a wide range of beverages and delicious desserts. The meal costs 3. 50 euro and you can pay it with your Muck card (an ID card that allows students pay without cash in the canteen and cafeterias and pay without cash to use photocopiers and printers in the IT center).

Is the nightlife good in Würzburg? Where is good to go?

In Würzburg the nightlife is varied.

A wonderful disco club is das Boot. It is a disco club vessel located on the river Meno. Beer is very good and the entrance is free for students that attend the first semester at the university.

Bombe is another disco located at the market square. It offers great music to dance and delicious Weissbier. The dresscode is not important!

I say this because in the disco Odeon it is forbidden to enter with sneakers and casual outfits. A scandal for me!

What advice would you give future students heading to Würzburg?

Enjoy Würzburg in all its beauty.. Don't be scared of making mistakes while speaking in German! Take part in parties or events organized by student associations or International Office of the University! They represent a good chance to know other foreign students from wonderful countries!
