Erasmus Experience in Würzburg, Germany
Why did you decide to go to Würzburg, in Germany?
I study languages in Italy and needed to improve my German, and Würzburg university was the one with the most subjects that had exams which would be recognised by my home university.
How long did your grant last? How much did you receive?
The Erasmus grant lasts from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 12 months. I was in Germany for 10 months and my university, together with the European Community, contributed €370 per month.
How was the student atmosphere in Würzburg?
The student atmosphere is very stimulating I have to say. Plus as it is not a huge city it is
easier to meet people
and see them again at a party or in the library.
Would you recommend Würzburg city and university to other students?
Yes absolutely, it is a great choice.
What is the country's food like?
German cuisine, in particular Bavarian, is mainly meat-based; it isn't very varied but it's tasty.
How did you find accommodation?
Initially I sent many emails to people who were advertising rooms in the famous "WG", but I didn't receive any responses. As a result, I contacted Studentwerk who offer single rooms complete with everything, in student accommodation around the city. This choice has it's pros and cons.
How much is accommodation? And what are prices like in general?
I paid €198 per month, which is not much. However, this doesn't include the internet bill (€14 per month) or the cost of laundry (€1.50 per wash). In general, it is not an expensive city.
How was the language? Did you attend any university courses?
My language is much better than when I arrived. In order to improve it is best to avoid contact with speakers of your native language, and if possible to always be in contact with Germans. I did this for the first 6 and a half months of my Erasmus and it paid off. Naturally attending university courses helps a lot, but not enough.
What is the cheapest way to get to Würzburg from your city?
The train, if you book in advance with Deutsche Bahn you can find offers from €40.
Where would you recommend going out in the evening in Würzburg?
Brauhaus, L-club, Odeon, Red Lion, Standard, Omnibus, Cairo, Airport, Studio, Posthalle, Cafè Renè, any pub on Sanderstrasse, depending entirely on your preferences.
And to eat in Würzburg? What are your favourite restaurants?
I didn't eat out a lot, but the best places, cheap and otherwise, in no particular order are: Alte Mainmühle, Lämmle, Sternbäck, L'osteria (exceptional pizza), Cafè Muck, Rathaus (keller), Kult...
What would you recommend visiting?
There are some museums, the cathedral, the fortress, the riverside, the old bridge etc.
What would you recommend to future students going to Würzburg?
Choose a student house or a private apartment that is as close to the centre as possible, as there is not much transport in the evenings, there aren't many buses. Also I would recommend, if your aim is to improve the language, to try to live with Germans and to speak with them as much as possible.
Machs gut, viel spaß und hau rein!
