The Green Midlands
Ireland's green midlands are a famous place for hiking in the wilderness. Between tiny, cozy towns and vast meadows you can encounter magical moments such as this rainbow!
With a group of international students, we headed out into the wild and soon found ourselves in a huge old forest with murmuring streams and ancient trees ... you could hear the water flowing and the birds singing, but all else was silent (except our own chatters).
In this magical surrounding, you felt as if being in a totally different place, far away from everything else you had ever known. The secret paths and winding streams seemed to lead to nowhere, and often we had to take shortcuts through the undergrowth to find our way forward.
After climbing a steep hill without a trodden path, we found ourselves overlooking wide fields of green with the typical Irish hedges ... only far away we could make out single houses to which we should return later on. The richness of the local nature was astonishing!
We crossed some fields and found a small street (alongside with a lone sign of civilisation - the electricity cable). In the great distance, you could see the Wicklow Mountains, partly clouded in fog, but at least giving you some orientation in this green desert. The frequent rain had served its purpose well and let grow an insane quantity of fresh green plants!
Following the street, we found our way back (no, we were not lost - also thanks to our smartphones) and refreshed ourselves in a small cafè with some hot tea.
PS. Did you know that the Irish respectively drink more tea (per capita) than the English do?
