Zaira's Erasmus Experience at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom
Why did you choose to go to Warwick?
My goal was to learn English, therefore I thought that by going to a smaller city like Coventry could best help me with this.
How long is the grant for? How much money do you receive as support?
The grant I received lasted for 9 months. It was comprised of state funds, for having been supported with a grant previously, and of money from the European Union. In total, broken down over the 10 months that I was there, I received 400€ a month.
What is student life like at Warwick?
Almost everyone is foreign, but not many are Spanish. It's a university with a great reputation thanks to WBS (Warwick Business School).
Would you recommend the city and the University of Warwick to other students?
Yes.
What is the food like in the UK?
Food in the UK has a bad reputation, but, in reality, it only has that kind of reputation because people want to give it one. I cooked the same things that I cook here in Spain, but that's only because I don't know how to be lazy and take the easy option of eating pizzas, burgers and pasta.
Was it difficult to find accommodation at Warwick?
No. The university offered me accommodation, but I did also look myself.
How much does it cost to live while at Warwick?
Around 700€-800€ a month.
What is the language like? Did you got any classes at the university?
I went to an English language course at the university, but I didn't like it because I had no Spanish classmates and I had to do all of the exercises in English.
What is the cheapest way of getting to Warwick from your city?
By plane from Madrid to London Luton, then, from there, by Megabus to Coventry.
Which places would you recommend for nightlife at Warwick?
Kasbah in Coventry.
And eating out at Warwick? Can you name your favourite places?
N/A.
And cultural hotspots?
Go to Leamington Spa - there isn't much else to see.
Any advice you want to give to future students at Warwick?
Go with lots of excitement and anticipation. The evenings can be very long. It doesn't rain as much as they say it does, and the rain showers are more reasonable than those in Madrid. Mind you, it's cold!
