Experience in Vitoria, Spain by Blanca
What is it like to live in Vitoria? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Vitoria is easy (it is a small city) and can be really interesting. There are a lot of different things you can do, from cultural activities to sport. I would definitely recommend it. The city is small and cosy, it is easy to move around and there is a lot of nice people willing to show you their city.
What is the student lifestyle like in Vitoria?
There are a lot of university students in Vitoria, and it is easy to find people to hang around. You can go to the bars in the old part of the city, practise sport, go to the cinema...
How much does it cost to live in Vitoria?
Living in Vitoria it is expensive compared to the rest of Spain, but cheap compared to Europe. However, it is not the most expensive city in Spain. The cost of living depends a lot on what kind of accommodation you find.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Vitoria? Is there any advice you can give?
It is not easy to find accommodation, and my advice is to share a flat with other students. I think is the cheapest and the easiest way to live.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
We have really tasty food. Potato omelette is probably the most popular dish in Vitoria, and also my favourite. You can taste it in mostly any bar from Vitoria. "Croquetas" are also a good choice, and easy to find in some bars and restaurants.
What places would you recommend visiting in Vitoria?
I would recommend going to Santa María Cathedral for the people interested in story (Ken Follett was inspired by it to write the second part of The Pillars of the Earth). Apart from that, if you are keen on sport, going to see a football or a basketball match would be interesting, we have two very good teams, Alavés and Baskonia. Other interesting thins are the park of Florida and Napoleon's house, which now is a restaurant.
Is it good to eat out in Vitoria? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Food and drink are probably the best things about Vitoria as I said before. We have traditional food as well as international food. I would recommend la Pintozzeria (for Italian food) and "La Malquerida" and "Alkartetxe" for traditional food. If you are looking for something cheap "Donga" is a good choice for you.
Is the nightlife good in Vitoria? Where is good to go?
Nightlife is good in Vitoria, but it's difficult to find a place to seat and drink some beers. It's good to go to the old part of the city -streets called Cuchilleria and Zapatería, also known as "Kutxi and Zapa". There are nice bars in those streets and around that zone.
What advice would you give future students heading to Vitoria?
I would advice them to be ready to learn some words in our local language (Basque) and not to be afraid to talk to people, they are quite nice, even if our English is not the best one in the world.
