What is it like to live in Venice? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I'd recommend Venice, but since there are no cars, you must be aware of the fact that you're going to walk a lot. Tourism, expecially during holiday seasons and in the most touristic spots, might be a bit of an hassle, but it's enough to avoid those specific location to avoid the crowd. All in all, Venice is a good city to live in.

It's not very difficult per se, but the earlier you start looking, the lower the price you can find, especially if you're looking for short periods. In Venice, rent can grow a lot over 500 euros for a single room. Mestre and Marghera are usually cheaper.

What places would you recommend visiting in Venice?

Obviously the most famous are San Marco and Rialto, but if you're interested in art and culture, it's definitely worth taking a look also at the academia and Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Most of the churches also have beautiful paintings and architecture. I'd also recommend a visit to Murano, but even more to Burano.

Eating out in Venice is good but also extremely pricey. Eating in San Marco square is one of those one in a lifetime experience where you must be ready to spend a lot, the same, even if a bit less, goes for most places famous among tourists. You can find good food at a reasonable price if you leave the tourist route, for example, in Campo Santa Margherita there are a lot of nice places where food is not too expensive.

Nightlife in Venice usually means Campo Santa Margherita. It's there students meet up in the evening. There are no discos in Venice, if you want to go, you'll have too look one up in Mestre or even farther.

What advice would you give future students heading to Venice?

Be ready to walk a lot. Cook at home it's a lot cheaper that eating out every time. Buy some high rain boots for high tide. Find some time to visit the city, it's really worth the time. Enjoy.
