Torres de Serranos
Today I would like to introduce to you some information about the Serrano's Towers. These two towers are one of the twelve old gates of Valencia city. They were built in the XIV century and they're style is gothic.
At the beginning, they were used as a defense of the city. The legends say that the guards closed the doors when the sun went down and if someone who had to sleep inside was outside, those people had to sleep outside the walls. We have an expression here in Spanish that says "quedarse a la luna de Valencia". I don't know exactly how to translate, but but "Dormir" means sleep, "luna" is moon. So it's something like to sleep with the Valencia's moon.
Then, with the past of the centuries, the towers were used as a prision, too. Around 1865 the government of the city ordered to demolish the wall around the city and they only left standing these towers and the Quart's Towers.
During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) the Towers were used to keep the pieces of art of el Padro, the museum from Madrid.
The towers were renovated many times through the years. Nowadays you can visit the towers and go upstairs where you can enjoy the awesome view of Valencia.
The schedule to visit it is:
From the 15th of March to the 15th of October:
- Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 19:00.
- Sunday and festivities, 10:00 to 15:00.
From the 16th of October to the 14th of March:

- Sunday and festivities, 10:00 to 15:00.
[Awesome views from the towers]

The day you visit them, you should wear comfortable clothes and trainers, because the towers have many many stairs. Bring your camera to take good pictures. Ah! The towers are located next to the old Turia's river, on the riverbed, and behind them you can find the neighborhood of El Carmen, the oldest neighborhood of Valencia. I will tell you something about it in following posts.
