Discovering my own city

I have lived in Valencia since I was born, but I have also lived abroad so I would like to talk you about the differences I have seen and then compare our sistem with others, giving inconvenients and advantages about livign and studying here.

I study in "tarongers" Campus in the UV, and I have seen, thinking as an International or Erasmus student, that it is a bit difficult to get here (considering all the burocratic requirements) and to manage the firsts days. But except for that, Valencia is a perfect city to live and study in.

As an incoming student, teachers will help you as much as they can; we have good people in the university and also spaniards in the classroom are really nice and talktative so you wouldn't have any problem to find new friends. From my point of view, you can pass your exams without too many difficulties; most of the teachers are really understanding.

The educational system can be sometimes very different from others in the world... We usually have more theoretical lessons with a light practice (normally once per week). Most of the time you can choose if you want to go or not to the class, but it is always better to take notes (if you don`t know anybody that can pass them to you) and to know how is going to be the exam at the end of the term. Other times they control the attendance and you need to go to class if you want to pass the exam. You should pay attention on the first lessons because they usually speak about all these things during this time.

Valencia is plenty of Erasmus students, mainly in the last years. People from all over the world is coming to study here. Maybe it is because of the weather, maybe because the city size is perfect to manage yourself easily by bike or bus, maybe because of the beach or the sun... it doesn't matter, the thing is that you can have a really great time if you solve the initial problems of preparing all the stay from your actual home. Sometimes it's not easy for you to know (from your home) how is actually the city or how does the things work here... I have been in that situation lots of times, so... make the most of this post and ask whatever you want!

Hi, thanks for your advice! I wanted to ask another thing - I've heard that most people in Valencia still speak mostly Catalan - is that true? I'm mainly coming to Valencia to learn Castellano so I'm a bit afraid i will learn Catalan instead of Castellano.. For example, if you meet with your Spanish friends, do you speak Castellano or Catalan? Would be really thankful for some information on this topic =) Best, Verena
