Generally, what is University of Cyprus like?

UCY is the public University of Cyprus and the bigger in the country. Most of the students aim to get a place here in order to avoid tuition so only the best from high schools are selected. In most cases is quit difficult to get in because you have to be a really really good student in High School and get high marks on the final exams. There is a quite big variety of studies and departments. Each department has different number of students depending on the staff and the facilities available.

What are the facilities like?

The facilities of the University are really good. The campus is located near the centre of Nicosia the capital, and can provide anything a student might need. Coffeeshops, restaurants, copy centre etc. plus a number of accommodation units. Some faculties like architecture and medicine are located in different places but all in the city of Nicosia.

What are the tutors like?

The tutors are different from department to department. I think all you have to do is adjust to each tutors' needs. There are greek, cypriots but also foreign tutors.

Are the lessons easy in University of Cyprus?

Well nothing is easy if you are at the University. Each faculty has its own difficulties and each lesson has a different amount of study hours, but due to the ECTS grading system the tutors organize the amount of work needed for a lesson depending on how many ECTS points it will give to a student.

Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?

Yes there are a lot of different activities that students can join. The university has a group for a variety of sports and all students are welcome to join. Also there are other groups depending on students' interests, like dancing, acting, photography etc. Also the University organises different events for the students depending on the occasion like welcome parties, concerts and more.

Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?

In my opinion and especially in my faculty (Engineering-Architecture) the quality of teaching is overall really high because there are not a lot of students so the tutors have a more closed relationship with their students and can help them more easily with any questions they might have.

Are there any stories you can share?

There are a lot of stories I could have shared with you about my studies in UCY but it's really important for a student to experience this part of his life by himself, so I don't want to preoccupy anyone with my personal view.
