Erasmus Experience in Turin
Why did you choose to go to Turin, Italy?
I chose Turin because it is close to France, it's a large student city and the proposed lessons are very varied.
How long is your stay? How much financial help do you get?
My stay lasts 9 months (a school year). I receive 160 euros per month from Erasmus grants and 100 euros per months from Crous (regional grants) from the Caen Basse-Normandie University.
What do you think of the student atmosphere in Turin?
The atmosphere is really great. Erasmus parties are organised from Thursday to Saturday evenings every week. Every week there is a cultural event and a lot of things are available for Erasmus students to do: trips, skiing, OktoberFest, etc.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Turin to other students?
Without any doubt.
What do you think of the country's food?
The food is very good and there's a wide variety. The principle of the "apericena" is very pleasant: you order a drink (cocktail or something else) and a buffet-style dinner for about 8 euros.
Did you have any problems in finding accommodation in Turin?
No, on the accommodation websites and Facebook groups mainly, there are a lot of adverts. I arrived on the 11th of September and I moved in on the 13th.
What is the living cost in Turin?
For the rent, you should set aside about 300-350 euros for a single room in a flat and 200-250 for a double room. Eating lunch close to the Uni costs about 3 euros. The price of the university courses are the same as in France.
How do you find learning the language? Have you been to any language courses organised by the University?
No, but they offered me the chance to go when I arrived. There are different levels and times.
What's the cheapest way to get to Turin from your city?
From France, the cheapest way is by train or by bus (or buses).
Which places would you recommend to go partying in Turin?
Lapus, Fuido, Quadrilatero, the San Salvario area.
And what about eating in Turin? What are your favourite places?
The Foccaceria (places which make and sell Foccaccia), the Sushi Shop and the Apericena.
And which cultural visits would you recommend?
The Museum of Cinema, the Museum of Cars, the Museum of Egypt, the churches and palaces, the Superga, the Monte dei Cappuccini (a church).
Do you have any advice to give to future Turin students?
Look carefully at the number of credits you have to get throughout the year, look at the number of books to read for each course (for literary/arts subjects) because there are a lot. Also try to share a flat with Italians!
