Experience in Trondheim, Norway by Lars Helge
What is it like to live in Trondheim? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The city is a student city and the student population is a huge part of Trondheim. There is a lot of activities organized by student organizations, like festivals, concerts, sports and trips. Norwegian students in general speak good English, but we do prefer to speak Norwegian and most of these activities would be in Norwegian if not international students participation. The climate in Trondheim is hard; during one day you might have sun, rain and snow.
What is the student lifestyle like in Trondheim?
As a Norwegian I think the student life is very good! I don't know how it is for international students, but I guess if you are a social person and get to know the Norwegians you will have a good time! Although Norwegians speak English we prefer to use our native language and I guess that could be a little difficult in some situations.
How much does it cost to live in Trondheim?
Trondheim and Norway are expensive for foreigners. The rent is 3500 - 5500 NOK, to eat at the university is 40 - 70 NOK and a beer is 50 - 80 NOK (1 EURO is about 7, 8 NOK).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Trondheim? Is there any advice you can give?
Yes, it is difficult. Website SiT is the housing office and offer cheap student flats, but you should be early. If not you can use Finn or Hybel, but it is mostly in Norwegian.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I think we eat more fish and sea food than in other places, but it is mostly the same as in other places I guess; Italian, Asian and so on... Compared to other places the biggest difference is the price level. It is expensive!
What places would you recommend visiting in Trondheim?
Studentersamfundet (the student house), Festningsparken (a park with a fortress) and Nidarosdomen (a cathedral).
Is it good to eat out in Trondheim? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I mostly cook myself because it is quite expensive to eat out.
Is the nightlife good in Trondheim? Where is good to go?
I think it is very good when it is not raining or snowing too much. Clubs like "Downstairs", "Gossip" and "Circus" are very popular and I like bars/pubs/cafes like "Antikvariatet", "Den Gode Nabo" and "Blæst".
What advice would you give future students heading to Trondheim?
Bring good, warm and water resistant cloths, try to find accommodation earlier and make a Norwegian friends.
