Why did you choose to go to Trondheim, Norway?

I was interested in working in hydrothermal precesses for the conversion of Biomass to fuels. From many places where to apply, I received a reply from a professor at NTNU who gave me the opportunity of working with him. (Master Thesis)

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

No answer.

What is the student lifestyle like in Trondheim?

Actually, I have heard many complains about Trondheim. Despite 1/5 of the population are students, you don't notice it. There are not to many places where to go and the atmosphere is not the most exciting one. In general the city is very quiet.

It turns quite difficult to socialize with Norwegians if you don't speak the language. However, they are always welcoming to help you.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Trondheim to other students?

It depends on what you want. If you want to have a different experience, actually quite studying hard, with not to much action, sure! University is great and facilities are nice. If you wanna make the most of your 1000 euro equilibrating social and academic life, Trondheim is not the place. Weather is not as bad as one may imagine, but the lack of sun can be quite annoying... In winter expect some kind of light from 9 to 3 pm. The rest of the day is night.

What is the food like?

You will miss your home food, wherever you come from.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Trondheim?

I was lucky because the International students office found a place for me; but that is not the case for everyone. If you are not granted with a place where to stay in before coming, to find a budget place can be your worst nightmare. In private market housing is at least 50% more expensive.

How much does it cost to live in Trondheim?

Having a very restrictive way of living, The required budget to, at least, survive in here would be 1000 euro a month. No partying, no going out.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

University offers language course with bad time tables. Besides, there are courses out there, but they are expensive.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Trondheim from your city?

Ryanair to Oslo Torp and then Norwegian to Trondheim. Otherwise, try to connect with Easyjet to Copenhagen and then take Norwegian to Trondheim. Norwegian also offers some direct flights to Spain, sometimes they might be a good option.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Trondheim?

There are very few places where to go if you have student's budget... you will know them here and surely you will be tired of them.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Trondheim?

I haven't been in a restaurant. But a heard from one friend that was eating pizza, a normal one, the bill went up to 80 euro... For a pizza with a coke!

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Trondheim in the future?

If you are coming to make your thesis, try to find a field you want to work on and contact the professors well in advance. Do not expect International student office to do everything for you, there are also some other thousand students coming here. So in overall, the most you can do for yourself, the better.

Try to learn a bit of Norwegian before arriving here, you don't need it, but it can be really useful when getting opportunities or jobs.
