Erasmus Experience in Trondheim, Norway by Corantin
Why did you choose to go to Trondheim, Norway?
I did an internship in a research group about wind turbines at NTNU. I choose Norway because they are well developped in terms of renewable energies. And also for the beautiful landscapes and the northern lights.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
5 months. I received around 1500€ feim Erasmus+.
What is the student lifestyle like in Trondheim?
There are many student villages which is very nice and we can meet a lot of young people (33 000 students at NTNU). The biggest drawback is that everything is very expensive so it's not always easy for a student.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Trondheim to other students?
Of course! The city is beautiful, norwegian people are very nice and respectful. And the university is very nice too, with very good equipments.
What is the food like?
They don't have so much food specialties. Let's say it's ok but you can find a lot of food specialties from many other countries.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Trondheim?
When you're abroad it's a little more harder but when you are in Trondheim it is pretty easy. You can find a lot of offers on finn.no or apply for student housing if you can (it's cheaper, you will be with other international students and it is easy).
How much does it cost to live in Trondheim?
Everything is much more expensive than in other foreign countries (at least France). I think the most expensive is alcohol. If you want some, don't forget to buy some at the duty free when you arrive!
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It is easy because most of (not to say all) people speak a good english. And there are some languages courses at university.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Trondheim from your city?
Plane but it's better to book your tickets as early as you can.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Trondheim?
There are 2 nights clubs where most of students go: Downtown and Wildside.
There are also some nice pubs in Solsiden.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Trondheim?
There is the Egon pizza Buffet which is one of the cheapest (available on Sunday and Monday evenings). There are several Egon restaurants but Tyholt Tower is a great experience cause you have a 360 view on the city (the restaurant is turning slowly). If you want to eat something more typical, you would probably have to pay much more.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
NTNU, Nidaros Cathedral, the city center, Bymarka.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Trondheim in the future?
It is a very great nature experience! But be prepared to spend some money.
