My experience in Tromsø, Norway

How was living in Tromsø? Do you recommend it? What is it like there?

Tromsø is a very small city (70000 population), but very cosy. Despite being small, it has an important university and a lot of students, so it is impossible to get bored there. Besides, it has all the amenities of a big city (shopping centres, stores, restaurants, bars... ), a very efficient bus line. Also, the mountains and nature are just a few minutes from the city centre, which is perfect for those who like outdoor activities; hiking, skiing in winter, climbing, etc.

It is completely different from Spain: the weather, the landscapes, the language, the culture... which is why it is perfect if you are looking to live a different experience.

I highly recommend it :)

What is student life like in Tromsø?

It is a small city with a lot of students, and there are many from all over the world as well. Weekly activities are organised for international students such as: parties, ice skating, cinema, language classes...

How much does it cost to live in Tromsø?

Life in Tromsø, like everywhere in Norway, is very very very expensive. Accommodation prices range from 350 to 500 euros/month, depending on the residency. A normal bus ticket costs 6 euros, although there are monthly and three-month 'bonos' for around 50-60 euros/month.

Food prices in supermarkets are way higher than in Spain, although you can find some good offers.

Other things like eating out, drinking out, alcohol, fruit or vegetables.

There are some other things, like clothing, which are similar to prices Spain.

The amount that one spends at the end of the month depends on the person, but I would say a minimum of 600-650 euros/month.

Was it hard for you to find accommodation in Tromsø? Can you offer any advice?

No, the university arranges the accommodation in student halls of residence.

What about the Norwegian food? Which are your favourite dishes?

The food is very good: there is a lot of fish (salmon, cod, etc. ), and byproducts like the cod liver oil (møllers tran).

Reindeer, seal and whale meat are also typical here.

NOTE: There are also many pre-cooked meals, specifically frozen pizzas.

Which places do you recommend to visit while in Tromø?

  • In summer, or anytime during sunlight, it is very appealing to go hiking on the mountains around Tromsø.
  • Fielheisen is an astonishing lookout.
  • The centre of the city is small but very pretty.
  • There are many beautiful lakes all around the Tromsø island.

Overall, the best of Tromsø is the nature that surrounds it.

What about eating out? Can you list your favourite places?

Eating out in Tromsø is extremely expensive, but there are many Italian, Asian and pizza restaurants.

What places do you recommend to go partying in Tromsø?

Driv, Victoria fun pub, Grunder, Circa... It depends what you like. There is a great deal of variety.

NOTE: All pubs close at 3 am.

Any advice you want to give to future Tromsø students?

You will not regret coming to Tromsø. It is very expensive, the weather isn't great and during the winter, when there is no sunlight, it can be a bit depressing. However, despite all this, it is truly worth it! It is an amazing place! :D
