Erasmus Experience in Trieste, Italy by Милица

Why did you choose to go to Trieste, Italy?

Because I wanted to expand my knowledge while learning about Italian culture and making new friends.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I am staying here for five months - one semester. I'm receiving 850 euros per months and it is quite enough for all my expenses.

What is the student lifestyle like in Trieste?

It's certainly fun. When you don't have classes, you can always go for a stroll and see something nice in the city or go to a party or some of many fun events that Erasmus student network (ESN) organizes.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Trieste to other students?

Yes.

What is the food like?

Great.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Trieste?

No, but it could have - I had a hard time finding an apartment, so I almost had to pay for a rental agency.

How much does it cost to live in Trieste?

I would say around 500-600 euros per month.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

I have a language course at my Faculty, yes, and there are also some free language courses for students aside from that. I guess that it depends on where you come from. Just to be on the safe side, I would recommend learning some basic things before coming here because a lot of people doesn't speak English.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Trieste from your city?

It's by a bus.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Trieste?

I haven't gone out that much, but I've been to Mandracchio and Stazione Rogers, those are the places where mostly students go out. If you're a jazz fan like myself, I recommend checking out Circolo del Jazz Thelonius. If you're looking for a place to have a drink, I would suggest going to Draw in via Torino.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Trieste in the future?

Like I said, I would recommend learning how to say some basic things. Be sure to find a place to stay before coming here. Also, note that you might have some difficulties with finding an apartment if you're staying only for one semester (most of the apartments are rented for the whole year). Be sure to find and contact your ESN buddy, that can be very helpful. Download the offline city map.
